Born in Philadelphia, he was a son of the late Hattie Hendricks.
In 1982, Don retired from the Fuller Company in Manheim, where he worked as a machinist for over 37 years. Following retirement, he worked for the Manheim Auto Auction for more than 10 years.
Irish served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Bulmer destroyer during WWII in the Asiatic Fleet.
He was the loving husband of the late Florence M. Hoke Devine, who died in 1995.
Throughout his life, Irish had a passion and love for his church. A very active and faithful member of Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church Manheim, he served in the church on the administrative board and as a steward, custodian, Sunday school teacher, choir member and on many committees.
His memberships included the Hope Fire Engine and Hose Company No. 1, the VFW Post 5956 and the American Legion Post 419, all of Manheim, and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
His other loves: having fun, fried oysters, mince meat pie and mostly, spending time with his family, close friends and co-workers and being a very special "Grandpa" to his grandchildren.
Surviving are two grandchildren, Dustin, husband of Sheila Devine, Newmanstown, and Marybeth Higgins, fiancee of Michael Henry, Palmyra; two great-grandchildren, Cara Higgins and Keira Devine; a daughter-in-law, Mary Lynn McCullough Devine, Lancaster; and a sister, Margaret Hoefel, Compton, Calif.
Preceding him in death were a son, Darrell D. Devine, and a sister, Eleanor Smith.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend his funeral service from the Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 48 Market Square, Manheim, on Monday, March 15, 2010, at 9 a.m., with Pastor Jeffrey C. Schell officiating. Interment is in Mount Hope Cemetery, Myerstown. There will be a public viewing at the Buch Funeral Home, 21 Market Square, Manheim, on Sunday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 PM. There will be no viewing on Monday morning at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent in Don's memory to the Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 48 Market Square, Manheim, PA 17545, or Horizons Hospice, 2300 Vartan Way, Suite 240 Harrisburg, PA 17110.
