He was the husband of Suzanne M. (Heinecke) Slegowski, a resident of Phoebe Berks Village; they shared 58 wonderful years of marriage as each other's best friends.
Born in Reading, he was the son of the late Thomas and Helen (Piwnicka) Slegowski.
Gene was a graduate from Central Catholic High School in 1950, where he was the valedictorian. He was a 1954 graduate of Notre Dame University earning a bachelor's degree in accounting. He was an avid supporter of the "Fighting Irish," serving as the treasurer of the Berks County Alumni Association.
He was the controller for Talbot Knitting Mills from 1961 to 1979 and served as the office manager for East Penn Manufacturing for 20 years, until his retirement.
Gene and Suzanne were founding and very active
members of St. Ignatius Loyola Roman Catholic Church, Whitfield. As the church grew they were active volunteers helping with fundraisers and other church activities. They enjoyed a large circle of close personal friends with whom they loved to play bridge, travel and have fun.
A caring man, Gene always put family first. In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children: Mary Beth, wife of John Turner, Marlton, NJ; David, husband of Phyllis Slegowski, Fanwood, NJ; Jean A., wife of Harry Morrow, Wyomissing; and Lisa, wife of Eric Kermitz, Macungie;
seven grandchildren: Jonathan and Samuel Turner; Jessica and Daniel Slegowski; David Morrow; and Matthew and Zachary Kermitz. One sister-in-law, Teresa Bradbury; one niece, Ann, wife of Mike Meschter and their son, Ian; and one nephew, Brian, husband of Barb Bradbury also survive him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at
1 p.m. in St. Ignatius Loyola R.C. Church, 2810 St. Alban's Dr., Sinking Spring, PA 19608. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., 739 Penn Ave., West Reading, and Friday from 12 to 1 p.m. in the church.
