George Eligman Obituary

George Jules Eligman died November 13, 2022. He was 99 and lived in Mount Penn on Cumberland Avenue for 70 years. He is survived by his wife, Sara Marcia (Fisher) Eligman and two sons, Bob and Don. George was born in Brooklyn, New York, attended James Madison High School, then New York University. He left college during World War II and joined the Army Air Force. He was a member of the Twentieth Air Force and served in the China-Burma-India campaign. When the war ended he returned to college, got married, and moved to Reading. He owned a hosiery mill in Mohnton and, later, supplied sportswear for shops nearby. George had a range of interests. He had a record collection of classical, opera, Broadway musicals, jazz, and folk and a collection of paintings. He kept up with current events by reading the New York Herald Tribune and later the New York Times. He watched TV talk shows until dementia made that difficult. George was interested in history, especially Jewish history. He was a member of Kesher Zion Synagogue and served as president of the United Jewish Appeal of Reading. He traveled to Israel just after the Six Day War. George was a family man. He and Sara Marcia had season tickets to hear the Philadelphia Orchestra. He took his wife, small boys and their friends to Phillies and Sixers games. When his sons were grown and moved away, he came to see them and invited them and their friends to dinner at a nice restaurant. Indeed, George was a gentle man who enjoyed most making others happy.
