She was the wife of the late John A. "Jack" O'Brien Jr., who passed away April 25, 2011.
Born in Reading, Mrs. O'Brien was the daughter of the late Kenneth J. and Katherine V. (Otto) Tarves. She was a 1948 graduate of Central Catholic High School and was a member of Saint Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church.
Mrs. O'Brien was an X-Ray Technician at Saint Joseph Medical Center and was employed by the American Cancer Society. She was co-owner of Classic Brides, formerly of Reading and also co-owner of O'Brien's Moving & Storage. Mrs. O'Brien was one of the first board members of Mary's Shelter; was a member of Junior Catholic Women's Club and was a docent at the Reading Public Museum as well as being an active volunteer for the Civic Center for many years.
She is survived by her children: Raphael B. O'Brien, of Pennside, Colleen K. Porcaro, wife of Angelo A. Porcaro, of Pennside, Veronica M. Giles, wife of David G. Giles, of Birdsboro and Mary F. Grachus, wife of Jeffrey W. Grachus, of Sun City, Arizona. Mrs. O'Brien is also survived by her grandchildren: Tina Thi; Harry; Pamela; Stephanie; Rebecca; Michael; Johnny IV; Carina; Shawn; Abigail; Hope and Bethany, along with her great-grandchildren: Natalie; Madison; Abigail; Olivia; Lyanna; Brooke and Halden.
Mrs. O'Brien was preceded in death by her son John A. O'Brien, III, who passed away May 20, 2017 and her brother James K. Tarves.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church, 4975 Boyertown Pike, Exeter Township, Friday, July 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Reverend John F. Rother, Celebrant. Interment will follow in Gethsemane Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends in Saint Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church Friday 9:30-10:45 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Saint Catharine of Siena Roman Catholic Church Memorial Fund, 2427 Perkiomen Ave. Mount Penn, PA 19606 or Mary's Shelter, 736 Upland Ave. Reading, PA 19607 in memory of Mrs. K. Mary and the entire O'Brien family, I'm so sorry to hear about Mrs. O'Brien's passing. I also had no idea about John. Please know that I'll keep you and your family in my prayers to be able to move forward and heal from your pain. I have so many great memories of being at the farm in Exeter. I will cherish these always.
