Laura Cagle Obituary

A candle that burns twice as bright burns half as long.”

Laura Mae (Scanlan) Cagle, 38, Reading, formerly of Schuylkill Haven, passed away Aug. 15, 2008, after a lengthy illness. Her loving husband of 13 years, Steven, was by her side.

She was born Oct. 4, 1969, in Portsmouth, Va., to Bonnie J. Zimmerman, Pottsville; and the late Vincent C. Scanlan.

In addition to her mother and husband, she is survived by a brother, Patrick M. Scanlan, and his wife, Tricia, Clay, N.Y.; and a sister, Lisa M. Rossi, and her husband, Eugene, St. Clair.

She cherished her three godchildren: Malachi D. Lockhart, Kannapolis, N.C.; Sonja M. Rossi, St. Clair; and Elizabeth L. Scanlan, Clay.

She also leaves behind her two beloved parakeets, Captain Bamm-Bamm and Sergeant Pepper.

Laura was considered a daughter to Mary Ann Cagle, Concord, N.C.; and a sister to Cathleen Halterman, and her husband, Jay, Muncie, Ind.; Amy L. Palmier and David Dubowski, both of Clayton, N.C.; and Laura E. Fry, and her husband, Ken, Concord.

She had six nieces and four nephews: Carolyn, Julie, Sonja, Briana, Katie, Betsy, David, Joe, P.J. and Jack, all of whom she treasured along with five great-nephews: Malachi, Micah, Noah, Jackson and Desmond.

She was a proud and devoted member of Advent Lutheran Church, West Lawn, where she belonged to the choir, taught Sunday school, served on various committees and was a former council member.

She was employed for the past 14 years as a residential services aide by the Hamburg Center.

She had many friends, touched many hearts and will be sorely missed.

Donations in Laura's name may be made to the memorial fund of Advent Lutheran Church, 16 Telford Ave., West Lawn, PA 19609.

A memorial service will be Thursday at 7 p.m. in Advent Lutheran Church, West Lawn. A viewing will be held Friday 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 to 11 a.m., followed by a religious service at 11 a.m. in Robert A. Evans Jr. Funeral Home, 208 Pike St., Port Carbon. The Rev. William E. To Laura's Family,

I was so sorry to hear about Laura's passing. I, too, graduated high school with her and remember several specific incidents where she had me cracking up laughing over something that was (at the time) supposed to be quite serious. World Cultures class wouldn't have the same excitement without her. I'm sure for those of you who knew her better than me her life was an adventure ... just knowing how she could roll her eyes makes me think of the funny situations she must have enjoyed in her life. I hope she kept her humor until the very end...it is after all our humor that sometimes relieves others' stress....peace to your family.

To All in Laura's Family,
I am so sorry to hear of Laura's passing. I graduated from Blue Mt. High with her, and we were in the chorus and ensemble together. One year, we practiced to put on a "Disney Spectacular"--something that required us to sing AND dance. Neither one of us were very good at the latter, but Laura could at least remember all the moves! That's more than I can say for myself. Anyway, thanks to her sarcastic wit and good-natured laughter, I muddled through the ordeal and remember it and Laura fondly. My heart goes out to all of you. She was too young to leave you, but I'm sure she's in a better place.

It seems like only a short time ago that we were in High School together singing and laughing toghether! She had such a great attitude and always made me laugh. Dear Steve, Bonnie, Pat, and Lisa

I am trying to find the words… I can’t find any that would adequately express to you the emptiness that I feel, though I am sure you know how my heart is aching! Laura started out my cousin, and became my friend and soul sister. We knew and shared things about each other and ourselves that we shared with no others. So many times we knew what the other was thinking before it was said. I wish we had spent more time together! I am thankful that whenever we were together, it was always so full of laughter and memorable moments. No one knew how to make us laugh like Laura did! No one else but she and I could have had so much fun breaking down in a place called Beaufort, South Carolina!

Steve,
No one knows better than you, how everyday ordinary activities could become an adventure when it was done with Laura.
As kids Laura and I were separated by distance and when distance no longer separated us, work schedules, or our own obligations did. But whenever together, it was as if our last meeting had been just the day before. Though death separates us now, I know we will meet again; but it is still so damn hard to let her go! I think of her, see her face and hear her laugh and wish that I could somehow bring her back!
You two were so truly perfect for each other. I know for a fact that meeting you was the best thing that ever happened to Laura. She had never been happier than she was with you. So thank you for making Laura’s life complete! For helping her experience TRUE LOVE! Thank you for putting Laura ahead of all else! And thank you for ALL you did for her! But most of all thank you for honoring those words for better or worse, in sickness and health, till death do us part. She could not have gone through all that she had without you by her side!
You will always be a part of our family, we love you, will keep in touch with you, our doors are always open to you and your family, if you need us anytime, day or night, you know where we are and how to get in touch with us.

Love Ya,

Steve,
My wife and I never met Laura, but we knew she was special because of the devotion and love you have for her. Though we have prayed many times for her recovery , the Lord wanted her by HIS side. He called her home, out of the pain and misery of this life, into a world that we ourselves could never imagine. She went to prepare a place for you by His side also. Grieve, but despair not; for she is with you always.
sincerely, John & Jana

To Laura Mae,
My sweetheart, my best friend. We had the best 14+ years. I can't believe you are gone, my world is not the same without you by my side, though i know you are always an angel on my shoulder til we meet again. You were the best wife a man could ask for. I am a better person for having you in my life. You are my rock and my salvation I love you more than words can express. Always in my heart, Steven

Dear Steve,
We pray for peace and comfort from our Lord for you and your family.
You and Laura have always been dear to us.
with love,
Bob,Grace, Tommy,and Bobby

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.
