Nellie Singleton Obituary

Nellie Lillian (Gilmore) Singleton, 67, Reading, was called home to be with the Lord on Friday, July 23, 2010, in her home surrounded by her loving family.

Nellie, affectionately known as "Polly" to her family and friends, was born on Jan. 19, 1943, in Reading, to the late Lillian (Stewart) and Milton J. Gilmore Sr.

She was a graduate of Reading School District and attended Empire Beauty School.

She was a member of the Saint John Missionary Baptist Church. Her presence could be felt throughout the community and the church, where she was always eager to volunteer and serve.

Nellie worked for Service Master, AT&T and ultimately retired from Tri-Star Management Inc., in 2003, due to her health.

In 1962, Nellie was united in holy matrimony to Walter Glenn Singleton Sr.

Nellie graciously assumed the role as her family's matriarch, mentoring all children and leading by example. Her activism extended beyond the family as a charter member of the Royalettes Club, serving as chaplain and a member of the Naomi Household of Ruth.

Her passions included cooking and spending time with her family and friends. She integrated these favorite disciplines in almost everything she did.

Ultimately turning everyday task into Christlike fellowship, she naturally put people at ease. Her home was a home for all. Spontaneous gatherings on the porch were frequent and welcoming and an example of a kind, pleasant woman filled with love.

In her spare time, you could always find her at a local flea market.

Nellie is survived by her husband, Walter G. Singleton Sr.; seven children: Karen M. Flowers, (husband, Robert L.), Muhlenberg Township; Walter Glenn Singleton Jr., (wife, Karla Smith), and Andre Durane Gilmore, (wife, Elwilda Young), Christine D. Singleton, Levniva Neal Veal, Samantha G. Singleton and Melissa L. Singleton, all of Reading; 23 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, two godchildren, sisters and brothers: Bruce J. Gilmore, Delran, N.J.; Joseph L. Gilmore, (wife, Maxine), Charlotte, N.C.; Dorothy R. Gilmore Copeland, (husband, Willie Ben), Diane Gilmore, and Danny C. Gilmore Sr., (wife, Jessica) all of Reading; Judy V. Gilmore-Nuss, (husband, Clarence), Sinking Spring; Leon L. Gilmore Sr., (wife, Shirley), Houston, Texas; John H. Gilmore Sr., (wife, Patricia), Sinking Spring; Jeffery B. Gilmore, Laureldale; Shirley A. Gilmore Dabney, Shillington; Larry Gilmore, (wife, Janice K.), Memphis, Tenn.; and Joanne Gilmore Farrah, (husband, Yusuf Sr.), Monroe Township, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Her sister, Susan A. Gilmore Liggs, and her brother, Milton J. Gilmore Jr., preceded her in death.

Services will be held on Friday, July 30, 2010, at 11 a.m. at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 436 S. Seventh St., Reading. A viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery, Neversink Road, Reading.

Uplifting Life Services are being arranged by the DeBaptiste Funeral Homes Inc., West Chester and Bryn Mawr.

To the Gilmore/Singleton Family: May God wrap his loving and comforting arms around all you during this time of sorrow. When I look at the picture that you have posted, I say, now that she is in heaven with Jesus, she is saying, "If you can see me now." She has a glorious body, smiling and rejoicing with the Lord. She would want you to focus on her no more pain. Lean on the strength that she left behind. The example that she left behind. The love that she left behind. I remember you all being a very close knit family, remain that way, and you will help one another get through this. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Lean on God, because he is our present help in troubled times.

Good Bye

In our minds we always knew
this time would come to pass.
But knowing it, and living it,
has come and gone so fast.

Goodbyes are often hard to say,
they hurt so very much.
Though you're not gone.
You still remain,
in the minds, hearts, and lives you've
touched.
