Ronald Krick Obituary

Ronald G. Krick, 68, devoted father, passed away Dec. 26, 2011, in his Spring Township residence.

Born in Reading, he was a son of the late William and Fern (Biffel) Krick.

He was a graduate of West Reading High School in 1961 and University of Cincinnati in 1965.

Ron was a former West Reading athlete who led the Cowboys to three straight Class C state basketball championships, was named to two All-State teams (1959 and 1961) and was selected All-Berks in all four years of high school (1958-61). Ron broke Wilt Chamberlain's state scoring record, finishing with 3,174 points, a 32-plus PPG average and earned national prominence with his election to the Parade and Scholastic All-Am-erican teams (1960 and 1961). Despite severe shoulder injuries, Krick played four seasons of college basketball at the University of Cincinnati, which won the Missouri Valley crown when he was a senior. He was drafted into the NBA by the Cincinnati Royals, but shoulder injuries short-circuited his athletic career, which also included track and field during high school. Ron finished his career playing for the Exeter Black Knights team that won the National Amateur Basketball Tournament, wherein he was named the tournament MVP (1970).

Ron is survived by his son, Reid W., husband of Laura Krick, Wernersville; his daughter, Shaan R. Schaef-fer, Reading; his brother, William R. Krick, companion of Carole Weik, West Reading; and his companion, Elaine Willingmyre, with whom he resided.

A Celebration of Life will be Monday at 2 p.m. in Toscani Wood Fire Grill, 1101 Rocky Rd., Reading, PA 19609. Burial will be private. Friends may call Monday from 2 to 6 p.m. in Tos-cani's. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Wyomissing Area Education Foundation, 630 Evans Ave., Wyomissing, PA 19610. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc., West Reading, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be recorded at www.kuhnfuneralhome.com.

We are very sorry for your loss of Ron. I remember when Ron, my father Wayne, brothers Randy and Brian, and I, Chris, went hunting with Ron. We always had an awesome time. Ron was a salesman at Lombard Bros. for my father many years ago before the company closed. I think of Ron frequently. He often spoke about his children and loved you very much. Thank you for the great memories, Ron.

To the Krick family
I played basketball with Ron at the Dolph Schayes camp in upstate New York, a long time ago. Probably 1959 or 1960. He was an exceptional basketball player. I remember seeing his picture as a Parade All- America. At camp, he was also exceptional among a group of top players in the states. My condolences to the family.
I was from Michigan at the time but currently live in the area

My condolences to the Krick family. I was lucky enough to be in the WRHS class of 1961. West Reading is a very special part of my life and Ron treated as one of the guys. Thank you, Ron. RIP

As an underclassman and someone who always looked up to RON, he made the little school of West Reading larger than life. RON brought pride and respect to our little school and also gave others the will to do the same.

Thanks RON

I recently had the opportunity to care for Mr. Krick. Though a short while, I could see just how loved and cared for he was. My thoughts and prayers are with each and every family and friend of his. May he now rest in peace.

As a teammate of Ron's on the 1961 West Reading state championship team, I can attest to the fact that Ron was a class person. No matter how much fame he attained, he never forgot his roots or his friends. To Ron's family, I offer my heartfelt condolence.

His athletic prowess was topped only by his compassion for those less fortunate than himself. He was a great friend who will be sorely missed by all who knew him well. His untimely passing is a great loss not only to the sports community but to the county as a whole. He will always be in the hearts of those who played against him and had the good fortune to know him. Jay Abramowitch

As a kid I heard and read all about Ron. I finally had the pleasure to meet him about 13 years ago and we had lunch a few times. He was surprised that I knew the number 3,174 right away. It's a sad day but he's in a better place. Sincere condolences to the family.

I send my condolences to Ron's surviving relatives and to the many friends he had in the sports world. I, myself knew Ron fairly well as a rival Muhlenberg basketball player (1962 grad) and remember his exceptional abilities as a player.

The Krick Family I was a kid growing up and with my dad who was a mailman in West Reading we went to alot of the WR games. I will always remember opponents pinching Ron on his legs and hoping to get him into a fight so he would get thrown out of the game. He never took the bait. He had too much class. I also remember him playing with one arm and shooting foul shots with his left hand. What a player he was. However with all that said he was one of the kindest, friendliest men I ever met. He will be missed by all. He was a speciai man.
