William Reber Obituary

William Robert Reber, 93, of Sinking Spring, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2023, in the care of Reading Hospital. He was the husband of 72 years to Ruby (McCallum) Reber. William was the son of the late Robert and Emma (Peifer) Reber, and lived his entire life in the house in Sinking Spring where he was born. William graduated from Sinking Spring High School in 1948, where his enthusiasm for all things science-related earned him the nickname "Doc". He remained fascinated with science and engineering throughout his life, interests which served him well in his work as a machinist and ultimately a toolmaker at Western Electric, in Laureldale, where he worked closely with engineers to develop and maintain tools critical to the early manufacture of fiber optics and integrated circuits. He loved nature and encouraged the love of outdoor activities for his family, for everything from camping and fishing, to cycling and hiking, all of which he documented through photography which was his lifelong hobby. William was a lifelong artist and DIYer, and a quiet man who lived for his family and never denied his children what it was his to give. Other notable enthusiasms throughout his life included Whizzer motorcycles, his cats, home computing, genealogy, hydroponic gardening, good bread, pretzels, and rivel soup. In addition to his wife, Ruby, William is survived by his children: John Reber of Sinking Spring; William C. Reber (Dona) of Reamstown; David J. Reber (Marie Larzelere) of Valley Forge; Bryon D. Reber (Alicia) of Florida; and Andrea Boerger (Matthew) of Wyomissing. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Will, Chris, Byron, J.R., Natasha, Jamie, and Andrew, and his great-grandchildren, Lily, Hailey, Kylie, and Walter. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the University of Pennsylvania's Harron Lung Center, or to the Animal Rescue League of Berks County. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, is entrusted with arrangements. Condolences may be expressed at kuhnfuneralhomes.com.
