Elton Garner Obituary

Elton R. Garner was born December 16, 1919, in Lower Lake, California to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Garner. Elton passed away on May 8, 2009 at 89 years of age. He is survived by his daughter, Bethany Rose, and husband, Gary, of Lakeport, and son, Randy Garner, and wife, Renee, of Willows. Elton is also survived by his five grandchildren: Brian Rose, Tony Rose, John Garner, Ryan Garner and Brianna Garner; great grandson Logan Rose, and many nieces and nephews.
Elton was preceded in death by his wife for more than 60 years, Retha Garner.
Elton was also preceded in death by his brothers, Worth Garner and Merritt Garner, and his twin brother, Dorance Garner.
Except for his service in the military during World War II, Elton lived his entire life in Lake County.
For most of his adult life he farmed and ranched in Long Valley, and operated his bulldozers all around Lake County in logging, clearing and leveling land and in building roads and reservoirs.
His family and ranch were his greatest joys. He enjoyed traveling, but only in the United States, and spending time at the ranch with his children and their families and his grandchildren and friends and perhaps most enjoyed taking his grandchildren on Jeep rides or hunting trips around the ranch.
He was active in his community and County having been president of the Glenhaven Mutual Water Company, a volunteer with the Glenhaven Volunteer Fire Department, a charter member of the Clearlake Oaks Lions Club, a very active member of the Clearlake Oaks United Methodist Church, since its beginning in the late forties, having served over the years in almost every lay position for the Church, a 4-H leader, a member of the Lake County 4-H Council, a member of the Lake County Cattlemen's Association, a foreman of the Lake County Grand Jury and past master of the Eastlake Grange.
Elton's funeral arrangements are under the direction of Jones & Lewis Clear Lake Memorial Chapel in Lower Lake, California. His funeral service will be held Thursday, May 14, 2009, at 10:30 AM at United Methodist Community Church ("Garner Chapel") 12487 The Plaza, Clearlake Oaks, CA, followed by a graveside service at Lower Lake Cemetery, Lower Lake, Ca.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Community Church ("Garner Chapel") PO Box 962, , Clearlake Oaks, CA 95423
Elton was a special person to many and will be sadly missed but never forgotten.

Elton and Retha were friends and neighbors to my family for many years. We miss their presence and will think of them often. They are a part of our personal history and the history of Lake County. My thoughts and condolences to the family.

Dear Bethany, Randy & Family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss and the loss felt by everyone who knew Elton. He was a very kind man through all the years I have known him.
I had the pleasure of working on wildfires in the early 1960's with Elton. I served as "Swamper" for Elton and his Caterpillar Dozer as he made a "fireline" around many fires. This was when I worked for the California Division of Forestry.
I was raised in High Valley (just over the ridge from Elton's ranch in Long Valley. My parents were always close to Elton and Retha. I can remember our many visits. The Stone's and the Garner's have been friends for many years. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Your friends,

Ron & Alice Stone
Lakeport
