Hugh Mackey Obituary

Hugh Mackey It is with heavy hearts that our family shares the news of Hugh Mackey's passing, after a long battle with brain cancer. He had many friends and business relationships in Lake County, a com-munity that he loved. Born on July 3, 1944, Hugh grew up in the Portland area. As a senior in high school, he moved to Lakeport graduating from Clear Lake High School. While attending Sacramento State, he was drafted and spent two years in Vietnam. After returning home, he opened Mackey Tire Center, which he owned for 37 years. As a proud veteran, he assisted the Vietnam Veterans of America in honoring fallen veterans by placing flags at Hartley Cemetery. Hugh was a caring and boisterous man who was an avid storyteller. His passions included fishing, diving for abalone, hunting for elk and searching for deals on boats and classic cars. His membership in the No Name Car Club assisted him in these pursuits. In his later years, he and his wife opened Lakeport English Inn. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Karan; four children, London, Chelsea, Cody and Tad; brothers, Ron and Jeff; sisters, Holly, Marlene and Jill; and a very special collection of loving family members including Kirk, Wendy, Steve, Dusty, Evangelos, Melissa, Aurora, John, Mike, Georgina, Tommy, Amy, Felicia, Brad, Allison, Erica, Luke, Brooke, Fred, Lilith, Kassy, Derek, Nefeli, Maxwell, Paraskevi, Ellie Mae, Amalia, Zoe, Ethan, Harriet and Loel. All were with him in person or in spirit when he passed away on Saturday, October 21. Hugh will be dearly missed. At Hugh's request, no public services will be held. His family will hold a private memorial in November. He was active in the Westside Community Park Development Project. In lieu of sending flowers, his family prefers that donations be made to The Westside Community Park Committee at www.westsidecommunitypark.org. I very sorry for the loss of Hugh. He was
a great guy and great business man. He was
very kind to me when I needed tires for
my car in letting me charge. Always with
a very good sense of humor and conversation. Lake County was a better place with him in it. I shall miss him.
My condolences to his wife Karen.

What I remember most about Hugh was his kindness. Long before I became a teacher, I was doing Day Care and had a load of kids in my VW bus (back before seatbelts, certification for day care etc.) and drove to the tire shop to see about getting a new tire. He told me that I really needed all 4. When I said I didn't have the money for that at the time, he smiled, looked at the kids, and said "I will put them on anyway. Pay me when you can." Yeah, I did pay him, but that memory has stayed with me, that he would put others first. Much love to your whole family, you all seem to share that generous trait..

Karen and family I was so sad to hear about Hughs passing. So many memories with our families. I still think about that one summer when it was so hot and you drove to Hugo's house from out of town and you and Hugh jumped out of your car and ran to the lake and jumped in clothes and all. So funny. Lots of memories. Thinking of you and the kids. God bless you. Kris Thompson Edgmon
