Thomas Morrell Obituary

Thomas D. Morrell, 67, of Kelseyville, CA passed away July 13, 2011 in Eureka, CA.
Tom was born December 24, 1943 in Kelseyville. He attended Kelseyville schools and graduated from Kelseyville High School in 1962. Tom played football and baseball in high school, but his passion was always baseball. Throughout high school, Tom worked at the Food Center in Kelseyville. After high school Tom went to San Francisco and worked for Lucky Food Stores and later attended Sacramento City Community College until he enlisted in the Marine Corp. Tom served in the Vietnam War during 1965-1967 as a Corporal-radio communication specialist.
After the war, Tom returned to Kelseyville and began a family with his wife of 45 years, Joan. They had a daughter, Cheri and son, Barry. Tom owned and managed the Food Center in Kelseyville for many years. He was a fixture in the town who loved to sponsor town sports teams and was generous in giving back to the community.
Tom had a passion for raising Hereford cattle that he passed on to his son Barry and his family. It was his "escape" from the busy life at the store. Kelsey Creek Herefords was known throughout the state for its quality cattle.
Upon retiring from the Food Center, Tom and Joan loved to travel, fish, hunt, watch movies and spend time with their granddaughters.
Tom was loved by all who knew him. As his granddaughters say....he was the best grandpa ever!
Tom is preceded in death by his father Sidney Morrell and Bill Lloyd.
Tom is survived by his wife Joan; two children, daughter Cheri (Donald) DeJong of Dalhart, TX and their children, Ashley, Allison, Alexandra; son, Barry (Carrie) of Willows, CA and their daughter, Bailey; mother, Nancy Lloyd of Kelseyville and Colleen Morrell of West Sacramento; sisters, Linda (Ed) Lauenroth of Kelseyville and Judy (Scott) Davis of Deming, WA; brother Terry (Dee) Lloyd of Forest Hills, CA; sister, Sydney (Mike) Moore of Kelseyville.
A Funeral Service will be held at Chapel of the Lakes Mortuary, 1625 N. High St., Lakeport at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 19, 2011. Interment will follow at Kelseyville Cemetery.
The family prefers donations to the American Diabetes Organization, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312

Joan and family,
I too felt that the Food Center changed when Tom moved on with his life and activities. He and his staff treated the customers like house guests and always made one feel like they were the only one in the store to shop. Treatment and service was always the BEST. Even in selling personal items like his 1964 blue Chevrolet pick-up - he gave a great deal and I still have it even though it is in need of a cosmetic fix since it is heading on to be 50 years old.
I send you my heartfelt sympathy.
