Daniel Hovey Obituary

MERIDEN - Daniel Hovey, 82, of Meriden, husband of Rev. Diane Lane Hovey, dn died on Monday, April 16, 2018.

Born in Haverhill, Mass., on June 10, 1935, he was the son of the late Carleton B. and Kathleen Allen Hovey of Beverly, Mass. A 1953 graduate of Beverly, Mass., High School, Hovey was an alumnus of Boston University.  He started his career in Massachusetts serving as editor of the Ipswich Chronicle and Hamilton-Wenham Chronicle and then as City Editor of the Beverly Evening Times. In 1961, he was named Director of Press Relations for Northeastern University and in 1965 he established the Department of Public Information at the University of Hartford,  serving as its director for four years.

Hovey became the executive director of the Connecticut Bar Association in 1969, serving in that capacity for 14 years.  In 1983, he was appointed executive director of the Massachusetts Bar Association in Boston. He returned to Connecticut in 1987 as executive director of the Connecticut State Dental Association. Following his retirement from association management, Hovey worked in administration at Yale University, serving as archivist for the President prior to his retirement. 

Hovey formerly served as Senior Warden of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Meriden and Calvary Church, Suffield. He was also known throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts as "Magic Dan" as he pursued his hobby as a children's magician for over 60 years.

Hovey leaves his sister, Helen Laus (Andre,) of California and East Monmouth, Maine; his brother, Allen Hovey (Lurana) of Beverly Farms, Mass.; his daughter, Heidi Hovey Bernard (Richard,) of Windsor; his son, Elric Hovey Walker, of Plainfield, Mass.; his step-sons, Zachary Lane (Renee,) of Hudson, N.H., and Geoffrey Lane (Amanda,) of Southington; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; his former wife, Nanci Hovey, of East Granby; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his grandson, Shawn M. Castonguay.

Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service to be held on Monday, April 23,  at 11a.m. at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 20 Catlin St., Meriden. Relatives and friends may call at the church prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. Entombment will be in St. Andrew's columbarium.
