George Mushinsky Obituary

WALLINGFORD - George Matthew Mushinsky, beloved son of Kate Marie Mushinsky of Williamsburg, Va., and grandson of Edward S. and Rita O'Leary Mushinsky of Wallingford, died Tuesday, May 18, in Williamsburg.

Born in Denver, Colo. October 27, 1991, George had been a gifted child and was an exceptional young adult who excelled in whatever captured and held his interest, whether in the arts or finance. He played guitar, wrote poetry and song lyrics and was in the middle of writing several novels. He enjoyed photography, especially taking pictures of friends and nature. He competed in cross country and track and lettered in both.

In grade school the faculty designed an award, "Soaring Eagle," just for him. He nicknamed himself, "Sky," ostensibly after a teacher told him to "get his head out of the clouds" in one of his classes. His mother felt that Sky was an appropriate nickname because George was always wide open and could be both beautiful and dark.

An honor student, George attended Walsingham Academy in Williamsburg and was to be graduated in June from Warhill High School. Two youth groups in the area organized a memorial service held Saturday evening in the Warhill auditorium.

Survivors include Peter L. Mushinsky of Hayes, Va., his uncle and godfather, Ann Mushinsky-Tralles, MD, of Morrison, Colo., aunt and godmother; Rep. Mary M. Mushinsky and Martin J. Waters of Wallingford, Jane M. Mushinsky and Eric Kuniholm of Vista, Calif., and Paul F. Tralles of Morrison, aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his uncle Mark S. Mushinsky of Brooklyn, Conn., who died Thanksgiving morning. George also leaves his treasured dog, Yoshi.

George's passing is mourned as well by great-uncles and aunts Lawrence B. and Arlene O'Leary of Stratford, Rosemary M. Wasilewski, widow of Francis, George F. and Helen Mushinsky, Mary M. Grant, widow of Harold, Annemarie Mushinsky, Alphonsus and Elizabeth Mitchell, all of Wallingford, Robert F. Mushinsky of Mystic, and many, many cousins.

The Rev. Gary F. Simeone, pastor, will celebrate the funeral Mass Monday in Most Holy Trinity Church at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. There are no calling hours, and relatives and friends are asked to go directly to the church on Monday.
It would please the family if memorials remembering George were sent to Most Holy Trinity Church, 68 N. Colony St., The Nature Conservancy, or to your local animal shelter. The Conservancy's Connecticut Field Office is located at 55 High St., Middletown 06457 and in Virginia the address is 490 Westfield Rd., Charlottesville 22901-1633.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Extension. www.wallingfordfh.com

Dear Kate,
I changed my name years ago but Sky and I were very close in 4th and 5th grade. We lost touch when I suddenly moved away and never met again. Sky lifted me up and was wise and kind to me when I was struggling, he kept seeking me out when I pushed him away, and I just hope he understood. When I was the most lost in life, I thought of my companion Sky and what decisions he would want for me. I think about him especially this time of year and on 5.18 which is coincidentally my birthday.
My deepest condolences and warmest regards to you, Kate.
P.S. I miss you, yourself!

Kate and family,

I will always have fond memories of George as a vibrant 7 or 8 year old when I lived in Williamsburg. I am very saddened to hear of your loss and know that I am thinking of you during this difficult time. Holding you in the light...

Dear Ms. Mushinsky,
I only met George once, seven years ago, but he made such a lasting impression that I've never forgotten him. He was the 5th grader that overtook my 4th grade son, David, at the last moment in "Accelerated Reader" points at Achilles Elementary. During the presentation of the awards, George was so gracious, shaking hands with my son, thus making a younger student feel OK about not winning 1st place. He seemed like such a bright, kind, exceptional child and although I didn't really know him I feel terribly saddened by his loss. Please accept my condolences.

"Sky" was just my waiter at Fridays but he was such a sweet guy... As a joke I wrote my phone number on a cocktail napkin and left it in with the check after I had told his manager that he was a fantastic server on his first night! I went back a few months later on my birthday and he happened to be my waiter again and remembered me like it was yesterday. I recall him saying "I would say your face is to pretty to forget but you deserve a better pick up line than that" I will never forget him! His family is in my prayers and I am so sorry for your loss!!!!

I wouldn't be the person I am today if it wasn't for George. I got a lot of my personality and sense of humour from him. I still remember our inside jokes.
Even 4 years after he moved, people told me I reminded them of him... I regret losing contact. I really do.

I knew George in middle school; he was in my math class all three years. He always smiled, and his smile spread to everyone around him. He was quite funny, very kind and always had something interesting to say.
I've wondered why people called him "Sky." Now that I know, I see how it fits perfectly. God bless him, and God bless the family during these difficult times.
