James F. Towne, 85, husband of Francoise St. Hilaire, died on October 7, 2021, at home with his family after a long, well-lived life. Born in Meriden, CT on February 11, 1936, he was the son of the late George and Mary (O'Dea) Towne. He had resided in Meriden, Southington, and Cheshire and had graduated from Wilcox Technical School and Central Connecticut State University. Mr. Towne was a teacher in Meriden at Jefferson Middle School and Washington Middle School and retired in 1992.

He was a member of St. Bridget's Church of Cheshire. He was a past member of the Elks Club and Meriden Retired Teachers Luncheon Club. He wore 55 badges as an Eagle Scout in Troop 8 of St. Joseph's. As a master swimmer at Meriden YMCA, he was a medal winner in his 70s at the Connecticut Nutmeg games. Competing well into his 80s, Jim achieved multiple Top 10 national standings in the United States for swimming in 2021.

Besides his wife, Jim is survived by his three daughters; Suzanne Towne (John Cramer), Stacey Vorhies (Robert Vorhies), and Cindy McCaffrey (Scott McCaffrey), eight grandchildren; Miles and Annalise Cramer, Katie, Mahlon, Hanna, and Larrson Vorhies, and James and Patrick McCaffrey. He is also survived by many beloved St. Hilaire and Towne nieces and nephews, and his dear cousin Christina Madden of Clare, Ireland. He was predeceased by his brothers, George, John, Robert and William, and his cousin Pat O'Dea.

Family and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Monday, October 11th from 9 to 10 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden, CT. A Mass will follow at Saint Bridget of Sweden Church, 175 Main St., Cheshire, CT. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. It was my absolute pleasure to have worked with Jim at Jefferson and Washington Middle Schools. Jim was an outstanding educator who had the respect and admiration of professional staff and most of all the students. May Jim Rest In Peace knowing the outstanding job he did working with all students!!
