John Albanese Obituary

John Albino "Jack" Albanese, 96, of Wallingford passed away peacefully at Hartford Hospital on October 27, after a brief illness. John was born in New Haven, the son of the late Julia (Gannon) Albanese and the late Joseph Gene Albanese. He is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Carmela (Lipka) Albanese; his daughters, Julia (Peter) Palumbo of Cheshire; Jean Albanese of Ellington and Margaret "Peggy" (Dave) White of North Haven; his sons John J. (Olivia) Albanese of Avon and Charles (Barbara) Tulchin of Hobe Sound, FL; brother Harold J. Albanese of East Haven; pre-deceased by step-brothers Frank Rubino, Louis Rubino, Robert (Jean) Gulley and sisters Theresa Albanese, Helen (John) Iassogna, Elivira (Jerry) Punzo, Marie (Robert) Sellman. John also leaves ten grandchildren, Arianna, Elisa, Brianna, Joseph, Stephanie, Jeremy, Robert, Danny, Melissa, and Erica; and two great-grandchildren.

John enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 17 and served in combat with the 6th Marine Division during World War II. He served on Guadalcanal, the New Georgia Islands, Guam, Okinawa, and North China. He was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation, Naval Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, China Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/2 stars, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, and China War Memorial Medal. During the Korean War he served with a Battalion Landing Team aboard the USS Donner, attached to the Sixth Fleet.

John was employed by the NY, NH, & Hartford, PennCentral, ConRail, and Metro-North railroads, retiring after a combined 42 years.

Affectionately known as "Pop" he will be dearly missed by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Pop enjoyed spending time with his family, reading and watching the news, and staying in touch by writing letters with his trusty typewriter or through special handwritten notes on greeting cards.

His family will receive relatives and friends at The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main Street Ext on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 from 9 am until 10 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Most Holy Trinity Church, 84 North Colony Street, Wallingford at 10:30 AM. Interment with military honors will follow at All Saints Cemetery, 700 Middletown Avenue, North Haven, CT.

I loved and will forever love my dear uncle Jackie. I cherish his typed letters; filled with war stories and thoughtful questions about my career and life in California. I will miss him so much. He is forever apart of me, and I am grateful to have been loved by him, and to call him (and his incredible legacy) family. My deepest condolences to Aunt Dolly, and all my cousins. I love you all and pray for your peace and strength now and always.

Jack this is "Rony" your cousin from Milford, long time since your last Christmas Card, actually last year was the first one I missed, for unremembered reasons I also didn't send any cards out in 2021 either. My warmest best whishes to your family, my memory of you as a young person and as the Marine that stopped for a visit, in New York City when you were discharged, I will always be proud of that visit, Tommy, my dad was very happy to see the young man you became. In your picture you look so much like your Dad, Uncle Joe. Rest in Peace

Dolly and family,

We are so sorry to hear of Jack's passing and the struggles of the last few weeks. Jack was a very interesting man. His typed Christmas Card letters were always a pleasure to receive and read. He lived a long and productive life. He loved his family and that love was obviously returned. May your many happy memories, and closeness of family sustain you at this time.
God Bless, and may he rest in peace.
