Leonard "Leonardo" N. Franco, art teacher, musician, and art therapist passed into the eternal arms of God on Saturday, October 16th 2021 at his home in Northford. Born in New Haven in 1945 to Louis and Camilla Carbone Franco, he was predeceased by them and his loving brother Donald L. Franco. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janis Leach Franco, his daughters Debbie, and Maura Franco, two cherished grandsons, his sisters-in-law, Lorraine Franco and Phyllis Rogovsky, his brother-in-law Dennis Leach, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A graduate of Notre Dame High School class of 1963, and of Southern Connecticut State University, he also attended Paier College of Art. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve. Known to some of his convalescent home art students as "Mr. Wonderful," Len taught art at several nursing homes including Whispering Pines in East Haven. He also taught for many years in both public and private schools in the New Haven area. As a skilled drummer he had been a longtime member of the New Haven Musicians Union. He was a communicant of St. Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish in North Haven. Len maintained a lifelong interest in religion, natural health, herbs, and meditation, including the teachings of the Self Realization Fellowship. Some of his happiest hours were spent with friends and family in art galleries, museums, and gardens. His favorite trips were to Italy, Medjugorje, Yugoslavia, and the National Shrine of the Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

The visiting hours will be Wednesday morning, Oct. 20th from 10:00 to 11:30 at The Havens Family, North Haven Funeral Home, 36 Washington Avenue. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated in St. Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish at St. Barnabas Church, 44 Washington Avenue, North Haven at 12 noon. Len was a most faithful friend, someone who sought to share his acquired wisdom and practices to help all reach their potential. I remember well his car arriving in front of the house unexpectedly and frequent conversations about Fr. Bill McCarthy or new herbs or sacred places where one might tap into latent energy and the will of God. Also so important to Len, besides his wonderful wife and family, was his work with elderly people in nursing homes, to bring out their talent and help restore often tarnished self-esteem. But for me, above all, he was a faithful friend, one whom I will miss immensely. He taught me much, and I will try to pay it forward. Thanks, my friend.

Dear Janis, Debbie, & Maura, This is my third attempt to express my deepest sympathies on Lenny´s passing. Lenny and I attended ND and remained friends through college and after. Unfortunately life in the form of careers & family kept me from keeping in touch. Our paths crossed in 2001 when Lenny attended the memorial service for my father....I was so happy to see him. For some reason I felt the need to pray for Lenny these past several months and was hoping to renew our relationship when this pandemic is over. An opportunity lost. Lenny was the most sincere, honest trustworthy and compassionate friend. I too am saddened by his passing and wish I had done more to maintain our relationship; he was the best of the best. I hope you can take comfort knowing Lenny is resting in comfort in God´s arms, and probably playing the drums in God´s band proclaiming His glory. God bless.

Dear Janis, Debbie and Maura, I began writing any earlier message but lost it because it was too long.. Lenny and I were close friends from ND, college and thereafter until life, careers and family took over. Lenny was the nicest, most sincere and compassionate friend throughout those years. I had been thinking a lot about him lately, hoping that when this pandemic would be over we could renew our relationship. In fact I had felt the need to pray these past months for Lenny. My deepest sympathies to you on his passing. Please take solace that he´s now resting in comfort in God´s arms.

I am so deeply sorry to hear of Len's passing. I send my love and deepest condolences to Jan, Debbie and Maura. I worked with Jan at the Edward Smith Library and we always send holiday cards to each other every year. Len was such a wonderful man. I always thought he was so cool. We spend morning commutes together a lot as he was kind enough to give me rides to Southern while I was attending there. I used to love music we would listen to and he was really fun. He was such a devoted family man and he and Jan were perfect together. Jan, I love you with all my heart! I know all your memories together will sustain you as you grieve.
