LeRoy Callahan Obituary

SCITUATE, MASS.-Leroy F. "Roy" Callahan, former long-time resident of Meriden, passed away on Aug. 16, 2012, in Scituate, Mass. at the age of 86.

Beloved husband of the late Lois (Fox) Callahan; loving father of Patricia Campbell, of Cohasset, Mass. and Michael Callahan and his wife, Claire, of Wheaton, Ill.; loving grandfather of Colin, Todd and Brendan Campbell and Matthew and Patrick Callahan; brother of the late John ("Jack") and Edward Callahan; brother-in-law of Edward and Laura Fox, of Jupiter, Fla.; son of the late John F. and Emma (Dorau) Callahan.

Roy served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, enlisting at the age of 17 with parental permission. He served with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing on Oahu, Hawaii and in North China. Roy was a 40-year employee of the G. R. Cummings Co. on State Street in Meriden until his retirement in 1990. He was also active in the local Democratic Party in the 1960s and '70s, serving as a registrar of voters. His hobbies included fishing, bird-watching, horse racing and family history research, but his primary love was spending time with his family, especially his grandsons.

As a young adult, Roy was an excellent baseball player, and played on a number of teams in the 1940s alongside his brothers, primarily in the city's North End. The "hot corner" was his favorite position, where he was known for his defensive skills. In addition to his life-long devotion to the Boston Red Sox, Roy was an avid follower of the UConn women's' basketball team.

Roy and Lois moved to Massachusetts in 2002 to be closer to their daughter, but Meriden and Connecticut were never far from their minds. As an amateur Meriden history researcher, Roy compiled impressive volumes of Meriden history in words and pictures. Roy will be fondly remembered by family, friends, neighbors and co-workers as a kind and generous man, with a good sense of humor and an unlimited capacity to help anyone who was lucky enough to have known him.

A funeral service was held at the MacDonald Funeral Home in Marshfield, Mass. Interment was in Couch Cemetery in Marshfield. For online guestbook, visit macdonaldfuneralhome.com.
