Matthew Ramsay Obituary

Southington - Matthew Stewart Ramsay, 89, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and formerly of Southington, Connecticut, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, August 25, 2023. He was born in Medford, Massachusetts, to the late Colin Ramsay and Pearl McElroy Ramsay and grew up in Arlington, Massachusetts. Stewart graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a degree in Animal Husbandry. He met his first wife, Sylvia Lewis, while they were both students. They were married in 1956 and had three sons, Todd, Mark, and Peter. After graduating from college, Stewart served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Alaska. Following his military service, he returned to Southington and worked on the Lewis Family Farm. In 1972, he transitioned from General Manager to Farm Owner and ran it until his retirement in 2008. Stewart was a passionate farmer and community leader. He served on numerous boards and committees, including the Connecticut Pomological Society, the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, the Town of Southington Inland Wetlands Commission, and the Southington High School Agricultural Advisory Board. Stewart was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was known for his sense of humor, love of life, and dedication to his family and community. Stewart is survived by his two sons, Mark Ramsay and wife Maria, and Peter Ramsay and wife Rachel, both of Southington; four grandchildren: Matthew John Ramsay (Lisa), Meghan Ramsay (fiancé Devin Lowe), Morgan Ramsay and Sophie Ramsay, and great-grandson, Elijah Ramsay. In addition, he is also survived by his brother, Colin Ramsay of Venice, FL, and his best friend and companion, Maxine Lardiere of Myrtle Beach. He had many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Stewart was predeceased by his first wife and the mother of his children, Sylvia Lewis Ramsay, his son, David "Todd" Ramsay, and his second wife, Marjorie Clark Ramsay. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Stewart Ramsay's name to: Southington Future Farmers of America, Agriculture Science and Technology Southington High School 720 Pleasant Street Southington, Connecticut 06489 (860) 628-3229 ext. 11415. A service to celebrate the life of Stewart Ramsay will be held on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church, 581 Meriden Ave., Southington, CT 06489. A burial with military honors will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, Southington. There are no calling hours. Plantsville Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling the arrangements. Stew and I became friends as our first wives were both elementary teachers and had developed a friendship. I'll never forget a weekend watching the Red Sox in Boston with our sons along in late 60s. He was a funny man. My condolences go out to his survivors.
