Robert Charles Knowlton
August 3, 1929 - December 15, 2025
Robert Charles Knowlton, 96, of Ashlar Village, Wallingford, died peacefully, with his daughter by his side, Monday, December 15, 2025.
He was the loving husband of Edith Lind Knowlton for 60 years until her death in 2013.
Bob was born in Gardner, MA, August 3, 1929, a son of the late Henry Charles Knowlton and Dorothy Burton (Baker) Knowlton. He grew up in Gardner, pitching a memorable no-hitter for his Gardner High School baseball team and making a hole-in-one on Gardner Golf Course. He graduated high school with a science award in 1947 and went on to earn two degrees in chemical engineering: a bachelor's degree from Northeastern University and a master's from NJIT in 1958 while working for Worthington Corporation. He then had a successful career with DuPont for 32 years, with his name attached to two company patents, traveling overseas to consult with clients in Europe, and moving between Delaware and Kinston, North Carolina.
Outside of work, he was a true family man, supporting his wife's work and volunteer activities; his daughter's swim meets, philosophy of life, love of the outdoors, and serving as PTO president of Alexis I. duPont High School. Bob shared his sense of humor, love of music and interest in all things with family and friends.
After retirement and surviving prostate cancer, Bob became an active volunteer, spearheading a prostate cancer support group (Kinston, NC), and working with teens as a Junior Achievement advisor. In Wallingford, CT, he was active in St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Masonic Charities Foundation, and volunteered at Masonicare Health Center.
He is survived by his daughter, Alison Knowlton Karam and her husband, Christopher Karam of Killingworth, CT. He also leaves his grandson, Paul Robert Karam (New Haven, CT), and eight nieces and nephews: Janet, Richard and Jim Knowlton, Debbie Corey, Sandy Soho, Kathryn Lind Andrews, Alan and Rob Ela, and a sister-in-law, Diane Lind Ela. He was predeceased by his wife, Edie, and his brother, Henry Knowlton.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service Saturday, January 10, 2026, 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 65 North Main Street, Wallingford, CT. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 65 North Main St., Wallingford, CT 06492, or to the Masonic Charity Foundation, P. O.
