William Simone Obituary

William A. Simone, 78, of Moodus, died Nov. 23, 2011, at Middlesex Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy (Burdick) Simone.

He was born in Southington, on April 22, 1933, the son of the late Anthony and Mildred (Fusco) Simone. Prior to his retirement he was a salesman for Tuxis-Ohr's Oil Co. He and his brother, Tom, ran Simone Hardware on Main Street, until the fire that destroyed their business; previous to that he was involved with Simone Bros. Oil Co. He was a longtime resident of Southington and very active in the community. He was a volunteer firefighter for Southington for 37 years. He was a fire commissioner for the Town of Southington for several terms. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Club and the UNICO Club of Southington. He coached Midget football for a number of years. He was an avid model railroad buff and he loved the outdoors especially spending time with his wife, Dottie, at their cabin in Vermont.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by stepsons, Joe Wankerl and wife, Erica King, of Plantsville, and Glenn and wife, Melinda Wankerl, of New Britain; five grandchildren, Joelle, Cody, Frank, Mina and Andrew; a brother, Thomas and wife, Roberta Simone, of Florida; two sisters, Rita and husband, Jack Susco, of Plainville, and Jeannette and husband, Michael Pepe, of Westbrook; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

Private services were held. at DellaVecchia Funeral Home, Southington. Memorial donations may be made to the East Haddam Food Bank, P.O Box 572, Moodus, CT 06469 or East Haddam Volunteer Fire Dept., 440 Town St., Moodus, CT 06469.
