Diane Clancy Obituary

Diane Clancy

Greenfield, MA — Diane Clancy, 72, extraordinary wife, mother, sister, and friend passed from this world on Tuesday, June 17. Diane was a longtime resident of Greenfield.

Despite enduring unimaginable pain her entire life from a debilitating disease, she accomplished so much for so many with love, determination, honesty, and courage.

Degrees from Trinity College (math) and UMass -Amherst (computer science, art) propelled her in so many ways to help so many people.

She was a founding member of Western Mass Technica, Franklin County Progressive Network, The Peoples' Voice Newsletter, Community Health Center, HIV Support Group, Gay AA, Chronic Illness Support Group, and Artist Window Exhibition-Greenfield, among many others besides these greatest hits. Diane, in her spare time, was also an accomplished graphic artist and painter.

Ask anyone who knew Diane, and they'll tell you she was one of the most creative, intelligent, resilient, and deeply spiritual people they'd ever known. And she knew how to get things done with compassion yet strength.

Diane was predeceased by her parents, Ursula and John Clancy, and her beloved sister, Lee, who died in 2021. She will be terribly missed by her wife, Susan Elkin of Greenfield, the love of her life. Diane was an exceptionally loving parent to her daughter, Jennifer Clancy Boden of Clermont, FL. Diane is also survived by her dear brothers, John C. Clancy of Norfolk, MA and Mark Clancy of Orlando, FL and her much-loved nieces and nephews who loved hanging out with their aunt.

May we best honor Diane's memory by always seeing the good in others and never fearing to take action to fill a need or right an injustice.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Guiding Star Grange, 401 Chapman Street, on August 14th, 2022 at 3:00 pm.

I met Diane in 1977 through Movement for a New Society and the Clamshell Alliance, and we became instant friends. I haven't had contact with her for all of these years and just Googled her out of curiosity. I am so saddened to learn about her death. I can still remember her passion and her fierceness for all things good and beautiful. I will miss Diane.

We are shocked to read of Diane's passing! We were Facebook friends for years and eventually met up with her and Susan Elkin in USA in 2016. We will always remember her love and kindness. May she rest in Peace . With love from Steve and Helen Broekmann - Cape Town, South Africa

I am so sad to learn of Diane's passing. By chance I was in the Pioneer Valley mid- July and trying to contact her to stop by. Little did I suspect this was the moment of her passing. I loved her so much and learned so much from her. Much love to you all in your loss.

I only learned of Diane's passing today, so sad that much time passed since we were last together. She was such a guiding force in my life, encouraging me to share my art, to take part in the community effort to help other artists display their work. Her influence brought me to a new creative space I had long forgotten. I am so sad to think I will not see her again, but her memory will stay with me forever. My condolences to Susan and her family. Much love to you all.

Sending you Diane-like hugs and love, Jennifer, Susan, Margie, and those in Diane's near orbit from recent times. And I stand arm in arm with the many people, like me, who were close to her at one time or another in our lives. I know the circle does feel broken now with her passing, but she would not have wanted us to let that happen for long. She would be the first to re-arrange the chairs and pull us all together in caring and community again. Diane's empathy and understanding were unmatched and I feel so lucky that she was my good friend through MNS, Clamshell and beyond.

Susan and Jennifer and the legions of friends/family in Diane's World -- Wishing all peace and comfort knowing how much peace and comfort Diane offered. May we heed her bequest. She walked her talked and breathed it as well. Diane was one of the first people I met when I moved to town 45 years ago. I clearly remember that meeting in her beautiful, comfortable home. Her soft voice and strong gentleness. Thank you for sharing her.
