Georgette Devine Obituary
Georgette L. Devine
Conway, MA - Georgette L. Devine, 102, of Conway, died October 14 in Greenfield.
Born in Concord, NH, on January 27, 1923, and an early graduate of Concord High School, Georgette trained as a hairdresser in Boston in her late teens and in 1944 joined the Marine Corps where she served in Laguna Beach, CA as an aircraft mechanic for the duration of WWII.
She married Kenneth J. Devine of Somerville in 1946, and they made their eventual home in Larchmont and Mamaroneck, NY, where Ken was a teacher and school administrator. After raising their 3 oldest children, she worked at Selectro Corporation and at the high school library.
Wanting to return to New England, they bought a former dairy farm in Conway in 1969, built a home on Old Cricket Hill Road in 1973 and enjoyed a long and engaged retirement, Ken as selectman and tax collector and she at Sears in Greenfield and as a longtime library worker at the Field Memorial Library well into her eighties. She also volunteered as an election worker for many years.
After Ken died in 2004 she remained in her home, living actively and largely independently well into her 90s. She then lived with her elder daughter Kathleen in Hull for 2 years and in her last 3 years under the loving care of her youngest son, Chris and devoted daughter in law Carol at their home in Sunderland.
In her best years, she lived a generous and engaged life with hobbies such as French Club, gardening and quilting, had many devoted friends and the regular company of family, where she hosted many a holiday gathering and games of Tripoley and Yankee Swaps. Her children credit her long and healthy life to her nightly bourbon, as well as her Quebecoise heritage and her indomitable spirit.
Besides Chris and Carol of Sunderland, she leaves a son and daughter in law , Kevin and Cynthia of Tucson, AZ, two daughters, Kathleen of Wyandotte MI and Maureen of Portland, ME, and four grandchildren to whom she was 'Gigi': Meredith, Martha, Anahita, and Nina, and two great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Shahrazade.
It was Georgette's wish to donate her body to the Anatomical Gift Program at UMass Worcester. A private memorial luncheon will be held at a later date.
Chris and Carol wish to thank all the professional staff who showed much kindness to Georgette in the last months of her life.
Memorial donations can be made to the Field Library in Conway.
