Gordon Fairbrother Obituary

Gordon P. Fairbrother

Turners Falls, MA — Gordon P. Fairbrother, 93, of Clark Ave died Monday 3/21/22 at the Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield. He was born on April 10, 1928 in West Fairlee, VT, the son of Percy and Grace (Vancor) Fairbrother. The family relocated to Montague City in the early 1930's for work at the Rod & Reel Co. Gordon attended Montague schools until enlisting in the U. S. Navy at 17.

In the Navy, he served on the USS New Jersey (BB-62) in the final days of WW2, achieving the rank of Seaman 2nd class.

A mechanical wizard, Gordon worked in maintenance for various area companies, starting at the Montague Rod & Reel and continuing at the Millers Falls Tool Company and Lunt Silversmith. He was a master pipe fitter and ended his career at Couture Brothers after a number of years, working into his early 80's.

Gordon was a scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 6 in Turners Falls in the 1960's. He loved all things mechanical and enjoyed attending antique engine shows and flee markets, where he interacted with the vendors and added to his collection of old hand tools. In later years he was often seen walking around Montague City with his beloved dog Louie.

Besides his wife of 52 years, Alice (Engerman Morgan), Gordon leaves three sons, Lawrence Fairbrother of Turners Falls, Steven (Karen) Fairbrother of Buckland and Mark Fairbrother of Montague; two step-children, Cheryl (Rod) Varney of New Hampshire and Kenneth Morgan of Millers Falls, two granddaughters, Erica Noel and Stephanie Gary; step-grandchildren Becky Ann Damon, Jennifer Morgan and Mike Varney, four great grandchildren, Valliree Noel, Madison Gadreault, Jayden Gary and Josiah Gary, step-great grandchildren Jeremy Damon, Sierra Damon, Max Morgan, Ella and Freya Varney.

Gordon was predeceased by his first wife, the former Charlotte Plumb, in 1969, his brother, Robert Fairbrother, two step-children, Frederick and Gary Morgan, and step-granddaughter Sheri-Ann Varney, and step-great-granddaughter Hailey Morgan.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, April 9th at 11 o'clock at North River Cemetery in Colrain, MA.
