Jonathan Patton Obituary

Jonathan McIntyre Patton

Greenfield, MA - Jonathan McIntyre Patton, 81, died at home, as he wished, on March 12, 2024, in the comfort of hospice care and in the company of his best friend and sister, Clarise.

Jonathan was born September 27, 1942, in Madison, WI, to Elizabeth (Pfeifer) and Kenneth Patton. The family moved to Newton, MA, where Jon attended public schools and graduated in 1961 from Newton High School.

He served in the U.S. Army as a field communications crewman and infantry paratrooper, 82nd Airborne Division. (He enjoyed both skydiving and gun collecting/marksmanship well into civilian life.)

Upon honorable discharge, Jon attended Newton Junior College, Antioch College (Yellow Springs, OH) and the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he received his B.A. in Education and met Lorna Lamsa (Lancaster), his wife of 12 years and mother of his two children.

He taught school briefly in Falmouth, then found his true vocation and subsequent 35-year career as a residential carpenter throughout Western Mass, including building his own homes in Shutesbury and Charlemont.

Nearly as long was his membership in Alcoholics Anonymous, with 34 years of continuous sobriety. Jon was a lifelong Red Sox fan, extensive reader, motorcycle enthusiast, and crossword whiz. He created a life of simplicity, the final decade of which he spent at Elm Terrace, where he appreciated the mix of independence and neighborliness.

Predeceased by brothers Reuben Patton (Worcester) and Max Patton (Exeter, RI), Jon is survived by brother Michael Patton and sister-in-law Ellie (Palm Gardens, FL); sister Clarise Patton (Amherst); half-brothers Dag Patton and Channing Patton; sisters-in-law Rosel Patton (Worcester) and Donna Medas Patton (Exeter, RI); daughter Jessica Patton Pellegrino and granddaughter Stellina (Springfield); son Daniel Patton and grandson William (Sterling); and nephews John, Jesse, Michael, Eddie, and Jared.

Remains will be interred at The Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Winchendon, with a service to be scheduled at a later date.

Jon and I were friends of Bill. He was quiet and thoughtful and never told stories of his skydiving or marksmanship. Mostly he listened, a rare feat in this world and rarer still now that he's gone. My condolences to his family. Chip A.

As 14 years member of AA, I appreciate Jon's conviction to the program. The changes are hard, ultimately you become a stronger person. RIP
