Kathleen M. Hammond
Greenfield, MA - Kathleen M. (Langan) Hammond, 80, formerly of Leyden Road died Saturday 11/29/25 at the Arbors in Amherst. She was born in Greenfield on January 7, 1945, the daughter of Hugh F. and Helen (Kells) Langan. She attended Greenfield High School.
Kathy was a lifelong lover of horses, an accomplished western rider, teacher and breeder of purebred Quarter horses. Although horses were her lifelong passion, she loved all animals and was known to take in just about any animal that needed care and attention, including a lame goose found down by the river that she nursed back to health. She loved the art of tole stencil painting, a type of decorative art on antique trays or other tin objects of historical significance and went on to teach others after refining her craft.
Kathy was a well-known collector of antiques in Western MA and on Cape Cod. She knew how to "haggle" with the best of them to get a fair price at a shop and bid competitively at auctions, never worrying about where the next treasure would be placed in her home. She always said, "If you love it, you will find a place for it".
Kathy was a cornerstone in the founding of GBI Marketing, a family-owned business with humble roots in New England, growing into a nationally recognized fund raising firm serving non-profit groups throughout the country for more than twenty years. She believed deeply in "giving back" and in partnership with her beloved late husband, Skip Hammond, the family has provided philanthropic support to countless organizations throughout Franklin County.
Kathy embraced her heritage, proudly hanging the Irish flag in her home and taking a "dream trip" to Ireland with her dear friend Ellen, which she documented in a journal of their travels through the country.
Kathy was kind and compassionate, loved by all who knew her, and will be deeply missed.
Among her survivors, Kathy leaves two children, Shane Hammond and his husband Jeff of Bernardston and Kerry Hammond and her partner Jason Bassett of Northfield; two sisters, Pat Jordan of Longmeadow and Nancy Langan of Greenfield; a brother, Robert Langan of Saucier, MS; three nieces and a nephew.
Besides her parents, Kathy was predeceased by her beloved husband of fifty-one years, Edward "Skip" Hammond on July 19, 2017.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held Friday 12/12 at 10am at Holy Trinity Church, 133 Main Street, Greenfield. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Greenfield.
There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Beacon Hospice, 815 Worcester Street, Springfield, MA 01151 or to the Franklin County Regional Dog Shelter, 10 Sandy Lane, Turners Falls, MA 01376.
