Lawrence Kent Obituary

Lawrence George Kent

Colrain, MA - Lawrence (Larry) George Kent (78) of Colrain passed away on January 5, 2023, after a battle with cancer.

Larry was born in Newton, MA, to George and Esther (Jackson) Kent on June 20, 1944. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Boston University and his Master's Degree in Counseling from Ball State University. He went on to become a teacher, teaching fifth and sixth grades in the Greenfield Public School system for over 20 years. He loved to share his love of skiing with anyone and everyone, and loved taking his students on an annual ski trip. He was a very avid reader. When he retired from teaching, he fulfilled his dream of owning a used bookstore, Federal Street Books, in Greenfield where he would share his passion for reading and books with everyone who would listen.

Larry was a retired veteran of the United States Air Force, having proudly served his country for more than 28 years. He was a member of Second Congregational Church in Greenfield, where he enjoyed serving as Deacon and gathering with friends. Larry was a member of Republican Lodge of Masons in Greenfield where he served as an officer for many years, including Master of the Lodge, and as a District Deputy Grand Master. He joined Masonry so that he could also join Eastern Star with his late wife, Cynthia. He served Eastern Star for many years, serving as Worthy Patron numerous times. He was an excellent ritualist and loved serving as a Grand Representative to New York and most recently as Grand Warder. His favorite times were spent reading, skiing, traveling, and spending time with family.

He is predeceased by his loving wife of 50 years, Cynthia Kent. He is survived by his children, Heather Kent of Walpole, Cathryn Kent of Wenham, and Roger Kent and his wife Karen of Southington, CT; his grandchildren Kerowyn, Julianna, Kayla and Ian; and his great grandsons Kaden and Jaden. He is also survived by his siblings Marilyn Kosis, David Kent and his wife Lynne, and Arthur Kent and his wife Ruth, as well as many other loving relatives.

The funeral will be at the Second Congregational Church located at 16 Court Sq., Greenfield, MA, on Saturday, January 28, 2023. Services will begin at 11 am and will include a Masonic and an Eastern Star Service.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or Homes for Our Troops.

My favorite thing about Larry was his hearty laugh. His fun-loving nature was always something I looked forward to any time we got together. He also had a sense of adventure, like when he, Art, my cousin Debbie and I went backpacking in the presidential range (which he was doubting the wisdom of that first day). Loved any time he was on the room, he lit it up and made you feel at home. I´ll miss you so much Larry. You were a great man. Rest well.

Mr Kent was my 5th grade teacher at Davis Street School in the mid-80s. Everyone has that one teacher that made a real and lasting impact in their lives; Mr Kent was that teacher for me. He used to read novels aloud to us during free periods, and he nurtured my life long love of reading more than any other teacher. He was a wonderful and kind man and will be missed. My deepest sympathy to his family, friends and loved ones.

Larry was my cousin, just a few weeks older than me. As we grew up, we (our families) spent time together at our Grandmother Jackson's home in Madison NH. One of our favorite activities, at the time, was to hike in the nearby White Mountains. Picking blueberries and eating blueberry muffins and pie were some of the fond memories from those years.
