NORTHFIELD - Mary C. Taferner was a native of Greenfield, MA. Surviving the deaths of her father and brother at eleven years old she later attended Albertus Magnus College and Smith College. She loved education and was an avid reader.
In 1955, she married Richard F. Taferner of Pelham Manor, NY, a veteran of the Koran War. After thirteen dates their marriage lasted until her death. They raised three daughters in Port Washington NY where the couple resided until 1982. There she raised a family, worked in insurance and real estate. She made lifelong friends at Albertus Magnus and in her years living in Port Washington. She was loved not only by her family but by the people she has left behind.
In 1982, Mary and Richard moved back to the area she grew up in, Northfield MA where she lived until her death. She spent 10 years as the town clerk while Richard was police chief for the town of Northfield for ten years. There she attended Greenfield Community College to further her education. She met many friends wherever she went because of her outgoing, vivacious personality. She lived in Northfield for the rest of her life hosting hordes of family and friends who found her home so charming and welcoming that all considered 155 Main St. as a bed and breakfast inn and sanctuary.
Mary C. Taferner was an avid gardener where she turned her home into a place surrounded by beautiful gardens. She also excelled in genealogy and passed this interest onto her children and grandchildren.
She died on July 31st 2018 at her home in Northfield. She is survived by her husband, Richard, and three daughters Christine Anderson and her husband Rodd, Grace Taferner Hoefig and her husband Donald and Heather-Jo Taferner and her husband Stephen Lopez. Additionally, she leaves five grandchildren: Meredith, Kelly, Michael, Kurt and Brandon, as well as her three great grandchildren: Josie, Camilla and Michael. She will be dearly missed by all.
Funeral services will be observed on MONDAY, AUGUST 6, 2018 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at Holy Trinity Church, 133 Main Street, Greenfield, MA at 10:00AM. Rev. Fr. Timothy J. Campoli, will be the celebrant. Guests are requested to convene directly at the church in observance of the funeral services. Rites of committal and burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Greenfield, MA. Visiting hours will be conducted on Sunday, August 5, 2018 from the McCarthy Funeral Homes, 36 Bank Row, Greenfield, MA from 4:00PM until 6:00PM. Expressions of affection in remembrance of Mary, are preferred in lieu of flowers to the Northfield Public Library, 115 Main Street, Northfield, MA 01360
