Mildred Grant Obituary

GREENFIELD - Mildred Helen (Dimond) Grant, 94, passed away at Baystate Franklin Medical Center on Friday (9-16-2016), after a very brief period of failing health. Born on October 29, 1921 in Westmoreland, NH, she was the daughter of Furber and Helen (Stafford) Dimond. Moving with her family to Greenfield in 1925, she graduated from Greenfield High School, Class of 1939, where music became her primary interest. A scholarship for voice lessons at Stoneleigh-Burnham School, taught by Ruth Burt Sampson, furthered her music instruction. She sang in many local churches as a choir member and soloist, as well as at weddings, funerals and social gatherings. Mildred was an active member of the First Baptist Church from age 11 until its closing, and then became a member of the Providence Moldovan Baptist Church, attending regularly until her death.
Mildred married Frederick Grant on June 28, 1941, and made their home together on Pickett Lane. She was employed at Wilson's in the notions department, as well as being a gardener, knitter, painter and quilter. She also enjoyed stenciling and crafts of many other kinds, crossword puzzles and word games. Travel by land, sea or air were always something to plan and look forward to. Mildred was active in the Crafty Seniors, the Greenfield Council on Aging, and a writing group at the Weldon where she resided for 10 years, called the Welldone Writers.
Survivors include her son Howard Grant (wife Ellen), son-in-law James Graves and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Frederick, infant son Lawrence Frederick, daughter Pamela Graves, daughter Valorie Knowlton and son-in-law Richard Knowlton.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701. Arrangements are under the direction of Walker Funeral Home, 14 High Street, Greenfield.

Growing up it was always a pleasure having Aunt Millie visit. She was fun to be around and always on the go. I have many found memories of her visits to California and mine to Massachusetts. She could light up a room and made it possible for me to meet many extended family members. I wish there were more visits. Thank you for the joy you brought to my life. Rest in peace.

So sorry to say good bye to Millie.
She really made me feel welcome in the writing group and as a new Weldon resident. On the go until the end. She was inspirational.
