Sally Gregg Obituary

Sally Cook Gregg

Brooklin , ME — Sally Cook Gregg, 80, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 at Birch Bay Retirement Village from complications due to her extended battle with Alzheimer's. Born Sally Palmer Cook in 1941 in Greenfield, MA to Roland Henry and Frances Summers Cook, she and older brother Stephen were raised in the pastoral New England boarding school town of Deerfield, MA.

Sally was a proud alumna of The Bement School; Northfield School for Girls (now Northfield Mount Hermon) '59; Colby Junior College for Women (now Colby-Sawyer) '61; and The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill '63. An English major and Time Magazine editorial staff member, Sally had a great love for linguistics – from word origins and derivations, to puns and rhymes – that continued all her life through conversations, clippings, and crosswords. She and her Time Magazine colleagues would race each week to see who finished the New York Times' Sunday crossword first! An ardent political advocate, Sally campaigned for New York Mayor John Lindsay and Pittsburgh mayoral candidate John Tabor.

In her leisure time, Sally loved a spirited game of clay court tennis in the summer and paddle tennis in the winter – and the post-match luncheons and cocktail parties that followed. From family dinners to neighborhood Christmas parties, Sally was a consummate chef who possessed a quick and unfailing sense of humor. Cooking and laughter were always at the center of her home.

In later years, Sally adored spending time on 'Bantram' motoring around the pristine waters of Blue Hill Bay and the coast of Maine. Civic interests and clubs included: board member of Pittsburgh Planned Parenthood, Fox Chapel Garden Club, Fox Chapel Racquet Club, Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, Bermuda's Junior Service League and Pomander Gate Tennis Club.

Prior residences included New York City where she met her husband; Dade County, FL and Paget, Bermuda where her children were born; Pittsburgh, PA; Chapel Hill, NC; and, finally, Brooklin, ME.

Sally is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 53 years Arthur Watson Gregg; son Timothy Wyckoff Gregg, daughter-in-law Allison (nee Black), grandchildren Sutton, Palmer and Clara of Mountain Brook, AL; and son Stephen Summers Gregg, daughter-in-law Shapley (nee Stauffer) and grandsons Parker and Davis of Bala Cynwyd, PA. She is predeceased by her brother, mother and father.

Graveside services are being planned in Deerfield, MA and Easton, MD. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Alzheimer's Disease Research, c/o BrightFocus Foundation 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, MD 20871. Sally and I grew up together next door in our early years in Deerfield where our fathers taught at the Academy. She was two years my senior which always made her right in any discussion. She was very proud of her son Steve whom I know through our participation in the game of squash. I spoke with her occasionally and always wished we lived closer together in our later years as we had so many years before.
