Daniel Fong Obituary

Daniel Fong

1949 - 2018

Daniel, the third child of Suey Lung Fong and Florence Lum Fong, was born in Stockton on December 3, 1949. Although he had learning disabilities, he was still able to have a very meaningful life. As a volunteer driver he traveled everywhere throughout the greater Stockton area, always ready to help people who needed transportation. He drove people to their medical appointments, to do errands and shopping, and to and from their jobs. For this work he received a Certificate of Recognition from the California Legislature Assembly. Every month he delivered commodities through a Knights of Columbus program.

Daniel liked everyone and always saw the best in them. He was a member of Peace and Justice, the Chinese Sister Cities group, the Knights of Columbus, and a Hispanic Justice Group, and received many awards for his service.

Daniel was proudest of his part in establishing the S.L. Fong Park in the Blossom Ranch part of Stockton. His pride was twofold: because it recognized his father's own years of service to the Stockton Chinese community, and because it was a recognition of the part that Chinese and other immigrants played in the history of Stockton.

A Celebration of Daniel's Life will take place on Sunday, September 16th at 2 pm at the Vineyard Chapel at the Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer donations to the Daniel S.L. Fong Scholarship at San Joaquin Delta College (Box 111, 5151 Pacific Avenue, Stockton, CA. 95207). Scholarships from the fund will be awarded to Asians who are entering fields in the health sciences.

I am deeply saddened about the passing of such a wonderful and giving man! Daniel was and will always be a special man with a big heart. I will never forget his kindness and my beautiful "Asian Birthday" cards he gave me. Not knowing when my birthday was but the fact that I admire Asian traditions, he always made sure I had one or more every year. He will be missed by so many people and his memory will live on as one of the most amazing humans alive!

Daniel was a true Knight of Columbus. All that he did for his Brother Knights was done out of Charity, which is the primary foundation of our membership. Even when he was weak and tired from his chemo treatments, he still delivered meals to the homebound every week! His presence will be sadly missed, especially those to whom he delivered the meals and those who worked with him delivering the meals. One of them is having a hard time dealing with Daniel's loss.

I'm pretty sure that the Lord is welcoming him with these words: "Come good and faithful servant. Share your master's joy!" Rest easy good friend!
