Del Shofner
Del Shofner was a legendary wide receiver for the New York Giants and the Los Angeles Rams. He was the first NFL player to have over 1,000 receiving yards in more than one season, he did it three times, once with the Rams and twice with the Giants. He and Giants quarterback Y.A. Tittle were one of the feared passing combinations in the NFL in the early 1960s.

We invite you to share condolences for Del Shofner in our Guest Book.

That very first Giants game I attended, in September,1958, Mr. Shofner caught a touchdown pass. that season ended in "the greatest football game ever played", the legendary "Greatest football game ever played," which ended when the then the then Baltimore Colts beat my Giants in sudden-death overtime when Allan Ameche scored his most famous touchdown, which I still agonize over. Decades later, I would have the chance to remember this experience in several conversations with Frank Gifford, as both of us were living in Greenwich, Connecticut, and our daughters played on the same soccer team. Thanks for these precious memories, Del.

I went to high school 51-54 with Delbert, boy did we have a great football, and ever other team he was on.. Best looking and nicest boy in school. We were so proud to have know him and to be able to say he was from Center, Texas. My husband followed the Giants, Rams because of Delbert. He was a friend of Delber'ts and was proud to know him. My husband's name is Terrell L. Cook

As a life long Giant fan, to me, Del Shofner was and still is the best wide receiver in Giants history. In 1961, the Giants traded for Y.A. Tittle and Del Shofner. This tandem terrorized defenses on a weekly basis as the G-men won division titles from 1961-1963. Amazing, the Rams, who drafted him as a number one pick in 1957, traded him to the Giants for a draft pick. RIP 85!

God, where do the years go. I was 14 years old when the Giants traded for Del Shofner in 1961. I first saw him play in an exhibition game in Yale Bowl, New Haven Connecticut. Was, and still is, the best receiver I have ever seen. Thanks for the memories.

To the Shofner family:
My deepest condolences on the passing of Del. I remember watching him play for the Giants as a young fan and still have his autograph from when our family went to training camp in Fairfield in 1963. May you all be comforted by the fine memories he leaves behind.

Big Blue has been my team from childhood. We idolized Del & his mates mimicked them on our fields of play. Read of them during study halls. Proudly stood along side them waiting to perform at Cleveland stadium 1961. Condolences to the Shofner family. R.I.P. Del thanks for filling my boyhood with great exploits.

I grew up a Giants fan. Still am! My nephew and I had passing plays for all of the Giant greats, ie, Gifford, Webster, Rote and Shofner. 85-1 a down and out to the corner and 85-2 a post pattern.

Miss a lot of the greats. Condolences to his family and the Giants club.
