GEORGE MAKRIS Obituary

Balmville, NY

George C. Makris, international shipping magnate of 55 years, passed away on Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at his Balmville, NY home with his family by his side. A man whom achieved success in all aspects of his life, Markris was the epitome of the American dream.

Born February 2, 1925 to Greek immigrant parents in the Bronx, NY, Makris was raised in Manhasset, NY, working as a youngster in his father's delicatessen. In World War II, Makris served in the special services, Amphibious Command of the Army, in the Pacific Theater, landing on the beach of Leyte Gulf, Philippines with General MacArthur, and fighting in the battle of Corregidor, where upon he was decorated with the Bronze Star with Combat V and Purple Heart.

After 24 months in the Valley Forge Veteran's Hospital, Makris attended the University of Miami on the GI Bill, obtaining a business degree. There he met his wife, Patricia Georgitson, a National Airlines chief stewardess.

Always a car buff, endless efforts to secure a job in the automotive industry were fruitless, prompting Makris to take a position as a purchasing agent for the then "Dean of Shipping", Manuel Kulukundis. With his keen intelligence, uncanny intuition and enormous work ethic, Makris learned the ropes quickly, opening his own shipping companies Crystal Maritime, Delta Navigation and later Trident Maritime Agency. Makris would become world renowned within the shipping industry for his clever business acumen and debonair charm. His strong negotiation skills and fair-play, aligned him in close favor with Lloyds of London. He was a long standing member of UK Mutual P and I Club.

He thrived upon the intrigue and the dangers of operating a shipping fleet on the high seas from offices in London, New York City and Pireus.

A charismatic and dynamic individual, Makris resided in upper Brookville, NY with his wife and two daughters for 45 years. His roles on community planning and zoning boards were storied, as his brass-tacks savvy prevented anyone from taking advantage of the town or him. Philanthropically and socially Makris and his wife were generous and beloved. As a military veteran ambassador, he helped with the commissioning of the USS Leyte Gulf, CC-55. The Navy League of the USA, United Cerebral Palsy and numerous hospitals were allegiances Makris held dear.

A longtime member of The Antique Automobile Club of America, George Makris was an avid collector and restorer of 1930s to 1950s classic cars, winning countless show prizes, including the coveted Concours d' Elegance "best in show". His reputation for perfection in performance is still revered.

Widowed in 1996, Makris retired to his Fort Lauderdale residence in 2007, maintaining close to ties to both St. Sophia and St. Demetrious Greek Orthodox Churches.

Makris is survived by his daughters, Katina Makris and Barbara Makris; grandson, Jacob Hollander; and sister, Evangeline Makris.

A man of noble character and profound integrity, George C. Makris will be forever remembered for the impact he made on all the lives he touched.

Calling hours will be held from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. on Sunday, June 20, at Fairchild Funeral Home, Manhasset, NY. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 21, at St Paul's Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Garden City, NY. Burial will follow in Locust Valley Cemetery, Locust Valley, NY.

Local arrangements are under the direction of Brooks Funeral Home. To send a personal condolence, please visit Brooksfh.com or call (845) 561-8300.

George was an interesting guy. He once gave me a tour of his basement collection of car, from an army jeep still in a crate to a Ferrari, they were all beauties but his true love other than his wife was his two 1932 Cadillacs one completly unrestored original and a silver and blue Better than New restoration. Twenty plus years later I met up with him again. He was seemingly distraught about his wife passing. I met her once a beautiful woman. She drove a ten or fifteen year old Caddy. George said he was moving. He ha two cars ge wanted to give me, a Pontiac Grand Prix and a mildly customized 62 Chrysler four door hardtop station wagon...very rare. Unfortunately I did not have the room for them at the time. I turned the offer down. He was a nice person.

I was wondering what Georges Status was when I found this page on the net. Sorry to hear of his passing he was a great fellow. One time years ago maybe forty years ago he gave me a tour of his basement garage in Old Brookville. What a collection of cars! Jeeps in a box, Ferraris and of course all his Cadillacs. Years later I bumped into him again and he offered me several cars for free. A 1962 Chrysler 4 dr hardtop Station Wagon and a Pontiac Grand Prix but at the time I had no room for them so declined the offer. He was a very interesting man.

Dear Barbara, Kim, Jacob and Evangeline,

I have been helping George with his motor vehicles in Florida for over 15 years and have a great friendship with him. I loved to talk with him on the phone and hear the stories about his family. Even though I never meet him in person, he was a dear friend I will miss. He loved you all very very much and would give you all the world. He was a very giving person. I will truely miss him. He would always call me and check in to see how my family and I were doing. Jacob, he has told me alot about how good you play golf, and baseball and how good you are in school with computers. He would tell me that you have to teach the teacher how to use the computers. Hope you keep doing well as I am sure you will make him pride. Please feel free to contact me if I can help any of you in Florida. You all are very lucky to have such a wonderful brother, father and grandfather. He will surely be missed.

my father George was a stunning man, whom we all loved for his gallant charm, dynamic zest for life and his big, generous heart. It feels like a mighty grand oak in the forest has fallen with his passing. The earthen forest floor still shudders in its wake. We miss George, but thank all of you for your kind messages and support. His funeral was full on fanfare, too...police motorcades, Greek cathedral, military honors. May his spirit shine upon us all!!
