John Bartels Obituary

John Miller Bartels Jr., 59, passed away after a brief bout with cancer, at his Montgomery home on Sunday, March 19, 2006.

The son of the late John Miller Bartels and Edith Hunt Bartels, he was born March 4, 1947 in Brooklyn.

John graduated from Division Avenue High School, Levittown, N.Y. in 1965, and received both his BS and MS degrees in Forestry from the SUNY College of Forestry and Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y. in 1969 and 1971. As a student he was a member of Beta Sigma Rho Fraternity.

John's love for forestry, trees, and the places that we share our lives with was revealed in his spare time activities. He was a Cooperative Extension Master Gardener and very active with the Dutchess County Council of the Boy Scouts of America. John was also active in the Goshen Chamber of Commerce; was past Vice President of the Board of Directors for the Hudson Valley Postal Federal Credit Union; and most recently, a volunteer member of the Finance Committee of the Valley Central School Board. For the past 25 years, Mr. Bartels worked as a real estate broker in the mid-Hudson Valley ending his career as an Associate Broker for Ed and Margaret Williams Century 21, working out of the Goshen and Montgomery offices.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Susan Calvert Bartels, and his son, Christopher Bartels; his sister Joan and brother-in-law John Signorelli of Wading River, N.Y. & Del Ray Beach, Fla.; seven nieces and three nephews and many friends.

A tribute to John's life will be held on Thursday, March 23 at 1 p.m. at the Overhiser Funeral Home, 78 Union St., Montgomery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions should be directed to either the Hudson Valley Council of the Boy Scouts of America or to the family.

Arrangements were made by Millspaugh Funeral Directors.

To JB's loved ones, he was such a cheerful person. All of us at Liz's Place Salon enjoyed many an entertaining story that JB would share while having his hair cut. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. With heartfelt sympathy, Arlene and the crew at Liz's Place Salon.

I would like to express my condolences to the family, in learning of the early passing of John. I am a fellow Realtor, who worked with Dianne Hassman Realty in Wallkill, and have since moved to the Florida Keys, and now work with C/21 here. I so enjoyed working with John, he was a pleasure to work with, always a happy person, and always willing to help in whatever way he could.

Sincerely, Kaaren White
