Mildred Groo Obituary

Formerly of Highland Mills, NY

Mildred L. Groo, 99, longtime resident of Princeton, NJ, died Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at her home.

Born in Highland Mills, NY, she was the daughter of Rufus C. Gardner and Gertrude E. (McClennan) Gardner. Mildred and her husband, the late Kenneth R. Groo, resided in Highland Mills and in neighboring Central Valley, NY before moving to Princeton in 1942.

Mildred was an operator for New York Telephone Co. prior to her marriage, after which she became a fulltime homemaker. A lifelong Methodist, she was a member of Princeton United Methodist Church since 1943 and served on the altar guild and prayer chain.

Besides her husband of almost 60 years, she was predeceased by her brother, R. Franklin Gardner, and a granddaughter, Laura Beth Groo. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, David K. and Linda Z. Groo of Potomac Falls, VA, and Robert C. and Deborah L. Groo of League City, TX; a daughter, Verna E. Groo of Princeton; three grandchildren: Diana L. and her husband, Allen Thornburgh, Joanna M. and her husband, Aaron Smith, and Jason T. Groo and his fiancé, Suzanne; six great-grandchildren: Luke, Mason, Jillian, Sarah, and Zachary Thornburgh and Aldin Smith, and a niece and nephew.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 1, at 10 a.m. at the Princeton United Methodist Church, Nassau Street at Vandeventer Ave., Princeton. Rev. Jana Purkis-Brash will officiate. Burial will be in the Cemetery of the Highlands, Highland Mills, NY. Calling hours will be 9:30 a.m. until time of service in the Princeton United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions in Mildred's name may be made to the Louise Grow & Peggy Fullman Christian Education Fund through the Princeton United Methodist Church, 7 Vandeventer Ave., Princeton, NJ 08542 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
