Roma Soracco Sutherland

Roma Soracco Sutherland, a lifetime Liberty resident, passed away on Tuesday March 8, 2005, at the Sullivan County Adult Care Center in Liberty. She was 87.

The daughter of the late John and Albina Bajino Soracco, she was born February 18, 1918 in Liberty, N.Y.

Roma attended New York University and later graduated from Lowell Business College in Binghamton. She worked as a secretary for Judge Lawrence Cooke. She was also a kindergarten teacher at St. Peter's School in Liberty and was a bookkeeper for Crawford Overhead Doors in Liberty. She was a member of St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church in Liberty; Court Mary Anthony Catholic Daughters and St. Paul's Senior Citizens.

A family statement reads: "She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and will be missed by us all."

Survivors include her four children: Margaret "Peggy" Morgans and her husband, Lynn, of Liberty, William F. Sutherland and his wife, Mary, of Parksville, Maria Ackerley and her husband, Gene, of Grahamsville and Dr. Jon K. Sutherland and his wife, Justine, of Parksville; her grandchildren: James Sutherland and family, Chris Morgans and his wife, Linda Argentati, and their children Kevin and Kelsey, Shawn Morgans and his wife, Mary, and their son, Brian, Michael Sutherland, Laurie Birrer and her husband, Beat, Daniel Sutherland and his wife, Pam, and their children: Caitlyn, Joey and Emily, J.R. Ackerley, Lindsay Ackerley, Stephanie Sutherland, Meghan Ackerley, Jamie Sutherland and Justin Sutherland; a sister-in-law, Ann Soracco of Liberty; and several nieces and nephews.

Roma was predeceased by her beloved husband, William P. Sutherland, who died in 1997. They were married in Liberty on April 15, 1939 at St. Peter's Church. Three brothers: John, Louis and Frank Soracco; 2 sisters, Anna Lamoreaux and Albina Bitjeman; and a sister-in-law, Helen Sutherland, also predeceased her.

Friends may call at Ramsay's Funeral Home, 275 S. Main St., Liberty, on Friday March 11, 2005 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday March 12, 2005 at 11:45 AM at St. Peter's Church, Liberty, N.Y., with Monsignor Edward Straub officiating.

Burial will be in St. Peter's Cemetery in Liberty.
