Greg and Sharon,

I only learned TODAY of the loss of your son. I grieve with you, because you are both so special to me. When I heard, I immediately lifted my voice to the Lord and asked Him for comfort for you, because I can only offer words that would never fill that void. I love you both, and Kate sends her love to you as well, and wants you to know that she grieves with you too.

Love in Christ,

Ps 37:5

September 20, 2007

To all of you who have posted messages to this site, to brothers and sisters, classmates and friends,

I am overwhelmed by your kindness and your thoughtfulness, and I am not sure what I can say that will completely express what I feel for you.

I wish you could have known my son. If you did know him, I wish you could have known him as I did.

A little less than two weeks before Scott died, I was blessed with four wonderful days together in the Adirondacks on a kayaking trip. We had been going to the Northern Frontier camp together since Scott was 6 years old. Last year, Scott thought he might make a go of it alone, staying for a week. So I sent him, alone, but joined him for the last half of his week with my youngest son, Joshua. Scott regretted going alone and was so very homesick. I would see him at each meal in the Mess Hall, and Scott was loathe to leave me, getting a little teary eyed and being embarrassed by it. It broke my heart. Scott said he never wanted to go alone again, that he always wanted us, together, to go to Northern Frontier.

So, this year, we went together. Scott was 13, finally old enough to participate on one of the off site trips, either fishing, hiking, or kayaking / canoeing. We chose to kayak together. Our father / son group was rather small; there were only two other father/son pairs. Scott proved his mettle kayaking across a large lake with 3 - 4 foot waves plowing into us. And he was so proud of his accomplishment, as was I.

On the last day, we found ourselves alone in the middle of Eagle Lake. We typically were far ahead of the others. When we realized the others hadn't even entered the lake from the last stream, we stopped, pulled up alongside one another, and held hands to keep our kayaks together. I suppose we could have held each other's kayaks, instead. But we didn't. Even then I realized how special was that time, and I remember trying to impress it in my memory as one of those special times in my life. Throughout the trip, Scott would tell me, repeatedly, that he loved me and that he was having "the greatest time of his life." As we sat there in the middle of the lake, he told me again that he loved me. And I told him I loved him, so very much. It was a perfect moment on a perfect day, an end-of-July day, with blue sky and puffy clouds, blue water and green trees, and not another soul to be seen.

As the others finally came into view, I told Scott I needed to get another picture of him so his mom wouldn't be upset with us. She had given me a disposable, waterproof camera and I had given her my promise that I would take pictures. So Scott pushed away from me and I snapped the last picture ever taken of him. It's perfect; it's beautiful. He is at a 45 degree angle to my boat looking back at me, wearing his favorite t-shirt and sunglasses, looking so tough, so much the young man whom I love and of whom I am so proud.

That picture is now on my desk. I love and cherish it because of the memories it arouses in me. But sometimes it is hard for me to look at.

I miss my son; I miss my Scott.

Thank you, for your kindness, for your love, for your thoughtfulness, for the comfort your words have given me and my family. Thank you for caring.

I pray you will read this. But I will take the time to respond to each of you, though it may take me some time and though it likely will be brief. My email address is [email protected] should you desire to write.

Please accept my heartfelt thanks.

Warmly,
Greg Louks

Dear Greg and Sharon,

Words ring hollow right about now and I wish there were more profound messages out there to help you assuage your sadness and grief. I can only hope, as a father and as a friend, that your sadness soon is replaced by warmer, more fond, and happy memories of Scott and all he means to you and your family. Brandi and I extend our most sincere condolences and hope that Scott's presence and God's peace are omnipresent and everlasting for you and your wonderful family.

August 14, 2007

Greg and Sharon,

You have my deepest sympathy,
but it really doesn't help.
Your grief goes beyond
what words can express.

There's nothing anyone can say,
and nothing we can do
to heal your broken heart
or take away your pain.

Let God take you in His arms
and cover you with His love.
He knows the depth of your grief
and only He can give you peace.
He knows it will take time
for your heart to heal,and
your loved one has a place
that no one else can fill.

If there's any comfort let it be in this,
your loved one is with Jesus,
in a home that's filled with bliss.
There are no tears in Heaven,
no more heartache and no pain,
only love and happiness
for all eternity.

We must go on living and
do the best we can,
then when Jesus calls our name
we will be with them again.
