Simon Carroad Obituary

Walden, NY

Dr. Simon Carroad, of Walden, NY, passed away on Tuesday, December 23, 2008. He was 94 years old.

Simon Carroad was born at Lebanon Hospital in the Bronx on August 5, 1914. His parents, Philip and Malke emigrated from Russia approximately four years earlier with their four sons and two daughters.

Raised in the Bronx living at Washington Avenue, Hone Street, 165th Street, Teller Avenue and Knox Place, Simon attended Morris High School. After graduation, he attended New York University at Washington Square.

While attending college he worked for Thomas Harding who was an agent for various authors including novelist and mystery writer Erle Stanley Gardner, author of the Perry Mason mysteries. Si proofread manuscripts and delivered them to publishers in New York City travelling by bicycle and subways. Si continued to further his education by enrolling in the College of Dentistry at New York University (NYU) on 23rd St. Si married Sylvia Goldwasser from Rosendale, New York at the City Clerk's office in Brooklyn on April 11, 1942 in a civil ceremony and then he married her again in a religious ceremony on April 18, 1943.

He was enlisted in the Army in June 1943 at the age of 28 when the Army took over NYU. Si graduated from NYU Dental School as a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and became a Second Lieutenant in the Army. Following his graduation, Dr. Carroad was assigned by the Army to Hot Springs, Arkansas where he served as a dentist at the Army hospital and then was relocated to White Sulfur Springs, Virginia where he was joined by his wife, Sylvia.

In 1945, Dr. Carroad served as a dentist at Camp Hood in Texas where his first child Marilyn was born. Shortly after that he was made Captain in the Medical Corps and then was transferred to Camp Polk, Louisiana and then South Carolina.

In 1949, Dr. Carroad and his wife bought a home in Walden, NY and established a dental practice in the village in addition to the one he had previously established in Rosendale, NY. A year later in September 1950, his second daughter Pamela was born. Dr. Carroad was truly committed to his patients and strongly believed dentistry was a service he was providing to people, not a business. He loved his practice and had a special relationship with all of his patients, many of whom became friends of his family. He loved nothing more than being in the office unless it was spending time with his family.

In March 1957, his son Arthur was born. Si loved each of his three children and had a special relationship with each one of them. He adored his wife Sylvia and had a loving marriage. Their 65 year marriage was filled with wonderfully happy times and true love. Si loved his family. He travelled near and far with Sylvia and their three children. As a family, they enjoyed trips to the drive-in, ice cream stands, antique shops and car rides to nowhere. They took many trips together throughout the United States as well as Montreal, Quebec, Europe, Puerto Rico and many other places and always loved being together. Si loved photography and loved to meet people where ever he went. Si was an active member of the Walden Jewish Community Center in Walden and the local B'nai B'rith chapter for many years. He was a caring and gentle person. He wanted people to be happy and loved to see people smile. Everyone he met became his friend and he valued everyone's friendship.

Si is survived by his daughter, Marilyn Carroad McKay and husband, Brian of New Paltz; his daughter, Pamela Carroad of Walden; his son, Arthur Carroad of Gardiner, as well as nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews and a great-great niece; all who adored him; his brothers, Benedict (Ben), Samuel (Al), Jacob (Ken) and Julius (Yale) as well as his sisters Ida and Mary died many years ago; his wife, Sylvia passed away on July 19, 2007.

Services will be held on Friday, December 26, at 12 noon at the Walden Jewish Community Center Congregation Beth Hillel, 20 Pine St., Walden, NY. Burial will be in Beth Hillel Cemetery in Walden, NY.

Memorial contributions may be made to Congregation Beth Hillel, 20 Pine St. Walden, NY 12586.

When I was a single mother, in the early 80's, Dr. Carroad fixed a painful dental problem for me. He charged me nothing. He was a kind and caring man. I know he will be missed and has been deeply loved!

Please accept my sympathy and gratitude for knowing such a wonderful man and dentist.

Marilyn, Pam and Art,

As I reflect back to the days your dad took care of me and my family, I only remember wonderful thoughts. Not only was he a wonderful dentist, but a person you could talk to about anything. God bless you and your families. The children of John and Adaline Kurachek: Suzie, Johnny, and Kathy.
