William G. "Bill" Startup

William "Bill" G. Startup, 89, of Granville, Pa., died on Saturday night, February 11, 2006 at the Troy Hospital, Troy, Pa.

William was born on October 16, 1916 in Matamoras, Pike County, Pa. and was the son of the late Harry C. and Ella E. (Scales) Startup.

Mr. Startup graduated from the Port Jervis High School, Port Jervis, N.Y. in 1934 during the Great Depression. He worked as a farm hand, coal truck driver, butcher deliveryman, glass factory and fur factory worker. Mr. Startup married Robina Victoria Sutherland on May 30, 1941 in Deer Park Reformed Church in Port Jervis, N.Y. They had three sons together. Mr. Startup was a World War II US Marine Corps veteran, joining on August 6, 1942. He was honorably discharged on April 16, 1946 with the rating of Technical Sergeant. Bill and Robina bought property in Cuddebackville, N.Y. and built a home, and Bill resumed his work at the fur factory in Middletown, N.Y. He studied electricity under the G.I. Bill and took work with an electrical contractor after the fur factory closed. Eventually he began his own business, Startup Plumping, Heating and Electric, retiring in 1978. The couple moved to Leroy Twp, Bradford County, Pa. in 1987. Mr. Startup was a member of Deer Park Reformed Church in Port Jervis, N.Y. where he served as deacon from 1975-1977. He was a member of Free & Accepted Masons Lodge #328, Port Jervis, N.Y. As a young man Bill enjoyed swimming, camping, hunting and fishing. After retirement he liked taking his small granddaughters picnicking, canoeing, swimming and hiking.

Mr. Startup is survived by his wife Robina; his two sons, William Harry (Frances) Startup of Cincinnati, Ohio and David Startup of Saugerties, N.Y.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother Harry (Edith) Startup of Machanicsville, N.Y.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. Startup is preceded in death by his parents; a son Robert Startup who died in 1996; and a brother Raymond Startup.

There will be no services.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the family in the Rural Valley Cemetery in Cuddebackville, N.Y.

Cremation will take place with the Gerald W. Vickery, Jr. Funeral Home Inc., 110 West Main Street, Troy, Pa.
