Bernetta "Bernie" Jean Toms, Frankfort, died August 12, 2021, at the age of 92.
Bernie was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and endless caretaker of the family.
She loved being a CNA and training over 100 new CNA for Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital.
Bernie was a selfless person who spent her life caring for others.
She loved baking for any reason, and to this day has a 100 yr. old bread recipe making the best fresh baked bread. In her early years she loved our big family gatherings and dinners.
Her boys Larry, Mike and Tim held a special place in her heart. Chester "Lyle" Toms was the love of her life and best friends until they departed. She took care of him every day, every minute, every second of every day they had a love that only they could understand. They weathered every storm together.
Bernie loved coffee visits from Betty Charters and Darlene Heniser where they would catch up on the neighborhood gossip and the laugh of those three ladies could make anyone chuckle. They remained friends until the end.
She was the sweetest grandmother to all her grandchildren and great grandchildren loving them endlessly; they were her pride and joy. No matter where they went in life, they always had a chair in grandma's living room.
Bernie taught her grandson Kyle to cook at a very young age. She inspired him to go to the Culinary School at the Great Lakes Culinary Institute in Traverse City. She pushed him to be the best that he could be and loved trading recipes ideas. They loved watching the Food Network and being a very hard critic of the chef's food. They were two peas in a pod, best friends even.
Growing up, she and Kyle spent a lot of time together. She was his primary caregiver while his parents worked, and they shared so many great moments. Milkshakes movie nights, endless board games and all the action figures she could handle. They were big fans of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
She will be missed by many. Leaving a huge hole to fill but the memories will live on.
A Wonderful Grandmother.
We had a wonderful grandmother, one who never really grew old. Her smile was made of sunshine, her heart was solid gold, her eyes as bright as shining stars, her cheeks as fair roses you see, we had a wonderful grandmother and that's the way it will always be. When I miss your loving touch, I think of our fondest memories especially when the world seems too much. When we stare at the sky, I know you're watching down, a true emptiness felt forever in this little town. I will miss you forever, and ever after that. I am not saying goodbye, but until we meet again. Smile down on us all and I will see you then.
She is survived by children Tim Toms, and Mike Toms; grandchildren Kyle Toms, Morgan Del Rio, Josh Toms, Cory Toms and Jenna Toms; great grandchildren Kolten Toms, Kyleigh Toms, Traven Drake, and Braylen Brouillett.
A celebration of life service will be determined at a later date. Arrangements by Jowett Family Funeral Home, Benzonia.

I LOVED Bernie. I worked with her at POMH. She had a great sense of humor and was an amazing caregiver. Patients were lucky to have her and I was lucky to have the honor to work with her. She was a great mentor to us `younger´ nurses. I have her handwritten recipe for cherry pie in my cookbook. Godspeed Bernie
