Arthur Jabs Obituary

Arthur Dean Jabs

Arthur Jabs passed away Sunday, September 12, 2010 after a year-long struggle with esophageal cancer. He was born in Whittier, CA August 24, 1935 to Frances and Harry Jabs. He married his high school sweetheart, Janet Fifield October 4, 1952.

He worked for the water company in El Monte during and after High School. He moved his family to Yucca Valley in the early 1960's where he was partner with Bill Carlton in a general contracting business.
He later went to work as an investigator for the California State Contractors License Board in San Diego, Sacramento and later in Redding.

He divorced in 1984 and then was married to Jacquelyn Bestel for 25 years. He enjoyed traveling, playing cards with friends, garage sales and their cats. He loved the outdoors; camping, hunting, fishing and riding bicycles. He was an avid cook and enjoyed outdoor grilling. He was happiest living and playing in the California desert.
Although prickly, Art had a soft heart and was quick to help friends and neighbors. He could build a house from top to bottom and used his knowledge to help friends, neighbors and those in need. He was active in Habitat for Humanity. He chose to give back to the community "one to one".

He had a dry sense of humor, which could irritate if you didn't know he was joking. He was instilled with a strong work ethic and was disappointed when it was not shared by others. He held strong conservative views and was very independent.

He is survived by his wife Jacquelyn and brother Kenneth, children Dean, Francine and Amy, grandchildren, Connor, Hilary, Wren, Brad, Robin and Allison as well as Jacque's grandchildren and great-grandchildren young enough to remember him as "Grandpa" - Christie, Kelly, Brady, Bryson, Grayce and Raya.

A "Celebration of Life" will be held Friday, September 24 at 1 p.m. at
McDonald's Chapel, 1275 Continental St. in Redding.

The family requests donations to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

I am saddened to hear of the passing of Art. He was a special man who kept our work environment "lively" where we shared office space years ago in Redding. He had many words of wisdom for all of us and we appreciated it.

Dear Jacque and family,
It would be difficult to imagine the severity of the last year on you all.
As a member of the San Diego group of the past, I feel free to say Art was a good man to work with and I offer condolences to us all.

The sun rising from the east is not as reliable as you. Thank you for your dedication to what you believed in, all the many things you shared with us, and all you taught me. Also a special Thank You to Jacque for sharing you.

I'll always have fond memories of Art --- we drove each other crazy at work, but always ended with a smile. My thoughts are with you Jackie.

A man is a male who is caring, honest, and not afraid to express themselves because he does so with respect. Art was a remarkable man. We were blessed when he fell in love with Jacque (a blessing herself).

Dear Art, the laughing is past, but the memories are with me. Thank you for both.
Love, Jacque

I'll miss Art's masterful quips. He had one for nearly every situation. He had a way of keeping things light and kept me smiling. Art - I'm glad I knew you.

He was a wonderful father, teacher and friend. He was honest, caring and tough. He taught me what a man should be, how to win with grace and how to face adversity with dignity. I still can't believe he is gone. I miss him every day.

We are all here for you Jacque in any way we can help.

Having Art in our lives for these past 20 plus years brought us untold joy. He loved a good discussion and often could easily get a rile out of the person with whom he was "discussing". He never wavered in helping us or any of his friends if they needed it. Those of the POPS group know that he added so much to our monthly meals and also to our many travels. The "Dirty Dozen" as we have also been labeled will not be the same without him. He was truly one of a kind and a very special one at that. Art, thanks for the memories. Linda and Jim

When Art Jabs was your friend, he was a FRIEND!!!! I cherish the times I had with Art and Jacque in their home when I lived in Redding. I moved there in 2003 and they were my first friends and ended up being my best friends. He was truly one of a kind! We saw Art and Jacque in May 2010 and that last hug Art and I had is a very special memory. Heaven just became more lively! Love you Art and Jacque!
