Cathy Urban Obituary

Cathy Urban

1949 - 2014

Catherine Anne Urban, 64, passed into the presence of her Lord on Wednesday night, January 29, following a year-long battle with cancer.

Cathy was born May 17, 1949, in Los Angeles, CA, oldest daughter of Vincent M. Urban and Elma C. (Rockwell) Urban. Cathy contracted polio at age 15 months, which left her with physical challenges but rarely slowed her down throughout a life of adventure and service.

Cathy attended schools in Los Angeles and graduated from Westchester High School in 1967. She attended Simpson College (San Francisco) and UCLA, where she received an MA in Education degree and teaching credentials.

She served with the Christian and Missionary Alliance, teaching math and Spanish at Dalat School in Penang, Malaysia, at Alliance Christian School, Portsmouth, VA, and 13 years at International Christian Academy in Cote d'Ivoire, West Africa. After being evacuated from Cote d'Ivoire due to political unrest, Cathy served as bookkeeper for the field office in Conakry, Guinea, for 8 years. She returned to the United States in 2009 and settled in Redding.

She was a member of Neighborhood Church of Redding, and was active in many areas of ministry including Heart Matters and other Bible study groups, the Koinonia Sunday school class, AWANA children's ministry, and the Prayer Team. She participated in the Women's Ministry team for Redding, and held leadership positions in Alliance Women for her local church, area, and district.

Cathy volunteered in several capacities at Simpson University, and was recently employed as an administrative assistant in the Business, Psychology, and Leadership Division. She stayed involved in the lives of students and missionary kids at Simpson and at Gatehouse Ministries, through friendship, mentoring, and prayer.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sisters Beth McConnell and husband Mike of Green River, WY, and Ruthie Hankins and husband Frank of Colorado Springs, CO; nieces Amy Anderson of Green River, WY, Krista Brown of Redding, Camila Wendel of Colorado Springs, Mandy Dillon of Baltimore, MD, and Sarah Seavey of Greensboro, NC; great-niece Genesis Anderson, great-nephews Josiah Anderson and Parker Brown; and her step-mother Hilda Urban.

Cathy will be missed by her family and many friends, coworkers, and students in Redding and around the world.

Memorial gifts may be sent to The Christian & Missionary Alliance (8595 Explorer Drive, Colorado Springs, CO 80920) designated "In memory of Cathy Urban, for support of David & Camila Wendel."

A Memorial Service will be held Monday, February 3, at 10:00 AM at Neighborhood Church of Redding, 777 Loma Vista Drive.

A lovely example of a godly women and service to God and others. Her life and example was an encouragement to me in Guinea-Conakry. We will see each other again. Hasta luego, Cathy

Such a sweet woman of God. A great inspiration...

Miss Urban was an inspiration to me. She was my math teacher in high school at ICA in Cote d'Ivoire in the early 90's, and though her physical limitations were obvious, her spirit and enthusiasm were unlimited. She was a great teacher and though I have not seen her in over 20 years, the memories of being one of her admiring students remains with me.
Sincerely,
Jeremiah Haynes, ICA class of 1994

Sweet Cathy,

I will miss you and so many others will also. You touched many lives even in your last year with the illness. But now, you have a new body and can dance, sing, and worship at the throne of our Savior, The Lord Jesus Christ. Soon and very soon . . . we will see you again and The King of Kings.
