Dr. Noel Van Ness

1939 - 2015

Dr. Noel Van Ness went to be with the Lord at his home on Sunday, February 15 at 2:27 PM. He was surrounded by those who loved him; his wife, children and grandchildren.

Dr. Van Ness served the Redding community as an orthopedic surgeon from 1973 until his full retirement in 2010. He invested himself in his work and into other people's lives.

He lived his life intentionally and purposefully, defined by an unwavering sense of mission. In life he understood his role as a: Husband, Father, Grandad, Mentor and Friend…he understood why he was on earth and propelled himself to fulfill that purpose. In death he has left many of us a legacy that endures in a positive, life-changing way.

He is remembered by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth, and five children and twelve grandchildren (Beth - married to Rob Farrar; with children Joshua, Mary Beth and Kimberly. Becky - married to Rick Kraemer; with children Elizabeth, John and Daniel. Mark - married to Jill Van Ness; with children, John-Mark, Jessica and Jordan. Debbie - married to Brian Grigsby; with three girls, Kathleen, Hannah and Caroline. David Noel Van Ness - his youngest son). He is survived by his older brother Graham Van Ness.

Noel was born in Louisiana to Graham and Helen Van Ness in 1939 and grew up in North Hollywood, attended college at the University of Redlands and medical school at California College of Medicine (UC Irvine), with residency programs in San Jose Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He served in a small bush hospital in Zaire, Africa. He served as a major in the medical corps at Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina during the Vietnam War. In 1973 he chose to move to Redding, California, as a place to raise his family and serve the north state with their orthopedic needs.

Noel loved time with his family, especially out of doors; camping, swimming, boating and biking. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, four-wheeling to enjoy nature and explore his surroundings. During his time off from work Noel took part in a number of medical mission trips to Haiti, Mexico, Jamaica and Africa. Elizabeth and he enjoyed traveling in their RV and sharing times with their church group. He worked with his hands his whole life - in surgery to fit bones back together, wood-carving, and planting and tending his fruit trees at his home.

The key for Noel was a total trust and dependence on God, which he infused into his service as a physician and into many relationships with his church and community.

We will celebrate a life well-lived. He will be honored and remembered at a service on Saturday, February 21 at 10:30 on Neighborhood Church in Redding, CA. A burial service will be held at Redding Cemetery immediately following the service at Neighborhood Church.

Dear Liz
Perhaps you know me by my name: Jim Glaser. I was
a friend of Noel's at the Univ. of Redlands, he was one year
ahead of me. He was a good and a kind friend to me during
a very difficult time. We went our separate ways, but I have
often looked for news of him in the alumni pages. May your good memories encourage and bless you and your family.

One of the first men to meet me when I first came to Redding to assume the pastorate of Calvary Church was Dr.Noel Van Ness. He was always warm, friendly, and helpful and his love for Christ was contagious. He will be greatly missed. Our loss, heaven's gain!

You gave me a start when I first moved to Redding and I enjoyed working in your office until you retired. You gave me my first Bible and taught me how to be a better person and I have never forget the love and caring you showed myself and my family. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Noel was a gracious man of God in both his professional life and his private life. Professionally he ministered healing to me many years ago. Praise God he is reveling in the Presence of the Lord he loves. Our prayers are with Liz and the family as they mourn and celebrate Noel's final "graduation."

I met Dr. Van Ness at work where I was a nurse preparing his patients for surgery as well as recovering them in post op.It was in our shared break room that I appreciated his integrity, quiet strong faith and his willingness to communicate to all levels of people.I am wishing I had thanked him more but realize that is just to assauge my grief. He would not have felt he wanted more thanks.

So glad for the example he gave. Mom said he was at church the Sun. Before God called him home, living a dedicated, loving spirit despite limitations. Thank you, Dr. Noel!
I know he leaves a big hole and big shoes to fill!

I have known Noel and Liz for over 40 years. Janet and I have loved them dearly through the years. Noel has been an inspiration to us and our children. Noel was a man of faith and was intentional in sharing his faith with others. He was a skilled physician who gave loving care to his patients. He inspired me to live out my faith and I thank God for that. May the God of all comfort be with you, Liz, and with your family.

Liz, My condolences to you and your family on Noel's passing. The last few times I visited with him I could tell that this life had dealt him some cruel blows. I appreciate, so much, his willingness to share his knowledge on how to run a Christian business. There were many times that i went to him for advice. He always took the time to share with me. The success that I had at Redding Physical Therapy was a result of dealing with men like Noel Van Ness. There is a better world coming for us all.

Our family was blessed to have lived next door to Noel and Liz for five years. Our children thought of them as grandparents and we loved them like family. Noel will always be remembered for being a great man, putting God first, always had a kind word and a smile, just being the kind of person who everyone loves. We will miss him but know he is with Jesus now. Love, The Bova Family

I have enjoyed Noel bird hunting, 4-wheeling, and RV traveling.... We both loved the out doors. Due to his skills I was able to continue many of these activities after a near fatal accident. But,most of all he was a mentor that I will surely miss. His love for his Savior was evident in all he did.

Shasta County has lost a great man. I first met Dr. Van Ness on the orthopedic floor of Mercy Hospital, where I worked as a physical therapist. He always had a smile on his face and a kind word to say to everyone he saw. His deep faith in God, and his love for his fellow man, showed in the way that he treated his patients-with respect, kindness and caring. He was a mentor to me when I first started working with hand injuries, giving unselfishly of his time and knowledge. He touched so many lives, and will be greatly missed and long remembered by those lucky enough to have known him. My wife Sally and I send our deepest condolences, thoughts and prayers to Liz and the Van Ness family as they mourn his passing.

My Name is John Strode. Dr Van Ness was a superb surgeon. Re repaired the meniscus in my left knee about 25 years ago. I never really knew him, but he was a gentleman and a missionary. That touches me since my wife and I were teacher missionaries in China for over seven years. His friends and survivors were, and continually will be, blessed.

Noel was a great mentor and friend. We bonded quickly. When I asked him why he would devote time to me he said "Jack, it is because you are faithful and available." That really inspired me. Noel was always looking for people who wanted to grow in their faith. Driven, faithful, kind and available. Those are the words that come to mind when I remember him. I am very grateful to have known him. May God's peace that surpasses all understanding bring you comfort.

When our children were young and I was in Dr. Van Ness's office with their broken bones, Noel was my comforter and adviser. He helped to keep my anxiety in perspective and would pray with me for the affected child. There is no better physician than the one who gives ultimate healing over to our Lord and kindness to the mother. Our sympathies to the Van Ness family.

Our hearts are so sad today, but I know what joy there is in his Homecoming... and that faithful knowledge brings peace and a gentleness of spirit. Elizabeth, what an incredible man you were blessed to be one with. Noel was so loved by his medical community and others that new him. What a blessing and honor to have known him. Hugs always to you dear friend.
