John McIntyre Obituary

John McIntyre died quietly in his home February 11th, 2009 after several years of battling cancer. He never gave up, and only recently closed his sporting goods business of 30 years. He called it "Slo Seasons Sporting Goods" after a pioneer whose name was carved in an old tree in the mountains. It read "Here lies Slo Seasons Smith who died while searching for the corner around which opportunity lies".
John was born and raised in San Diego county but often visited relatives in the Redding area as a boy and enjoyed camping and fishing in the area. He served in the Navy for 3 years and went into sales shortly after. From the beginning he was very popular with his customers for his jolly easygoing style. He moved to the Redding area with his wife and 3 children in 1972.
John's business allowed him to travel throughout the most beautiful parts of northern California taking the opportunity to enjoy his favorite sport, fishing. After winning the Orleans steelhead tournament he was called "the great white fisherman" by the Hoopa Indians. John was the most at peace when walking up a stream casting his lure.
John is survived by his wife, Gail McIntyre, his three grown children, Tonya Bruce, Daryl McIntyre, and Mark McIntyre, his brother Michael Colling, brother, David McIntyre, his sister, Debbie McIntyre, five grandchildren and his beloved dog, Max. He has requested no funeral.

What to say when your dad passes away?
He had a lot to give to everyone.
Creatures of god are not here to stay.
I was fortunate to be his son.

A list of things I thank my dad for are;
random acts of kindness,
a sensible sort of blindness,
rocky roads in the pick up truck,
quirky jokes & good luck,
catching and eating more fish than any other,
a sister & a brother,
camping trips,
chicken lips,
digging ditches,
willow switches,
shooting guns,
beach setting suns,
long walks up a creek,
hiking up a mountain peak,
the Kawasaki a mini bike,
an around the corner endless hike,
chickens and billy goat,
a super shiny bass boat,
ritz crackers with salami cheese,
attitude that I am here to please,
amiable smiles,
rebuilding engines on my own VW,
eating corn beef hash and other grub ,
goofy nicknames I couldn’t top,
the pride to say that’s my pop…

The list goes on & on
as sure as he has past.
Now that he’s is gone,
we all get to choose what will last.

Dear Gail and family- What a shock to return to Redding and hear of your loss of Mac. He was one of our mainstays of the area and of the fishing industry. He and my late David shared such good years planted in the fising industry. It treated and rewarded Mac well, and made him the rough, personable and memorable cornerstone of the Trinity River run of towns. Like the river, the memory of Mac will run long and deep! My love and sympathy. Jeanne Stammet

It is hard to believe that I have known John for over two decades. John and I first met when I was the manager for Raley’s in Redding. Our business relation soon turned into a friendship. John helped to make Raley’s a destination and point of difference location for fishing tackle and was always one step ahead of his competition with the latest and newest fishing tackle items. John also worked with several different fishing lure manufacturers to have distinctive colors of their products and designs that were unique to his territory. Needless to say, this would drive the other tackle wholesalers that called on the store nuts. “How did he get that color or that lure?” was the question asked by the sales person. When I shared these comments with John he would always have a smile and a chuckle. It also should be noted that I would receive calls from as far away as Sacramento asking what the new hot color of Kwik Fish was and a run down of the latest trick fishing items that I purchased from Slo Seasons.

John and I were able to take several fishing trips together. This is where I found that John was known by other aliases such as “JP”, “John Patrick”, “Mac”, at Raley’s he was affectionately known as Slo-mo. I remember going with John on a trip to his beloved Wetchpec to do some salmon fishing and found that he was known by more than one name. The one item that I found most amazing was the sheer number of people that knew him as we stopped at several of his accounts along the way. Several of the people at a store location or walking into the store would say Hi John or Mac or JP. When we stopped to have a little lunch along the way we had every one at the café drop by the table we were at to say Hi to John, Mac, or JP. We even had people coming the opposite way down the highway that would honk and wave as they recognized John and his truck.

John---You are a good person and I feel privileged to have personally known you as-- my friend.

There are so many fun memories of John from years ago. I just know that he and Dave are kickin back reminiscing over their "Gulch" experiences.
Find peace, dear friend, in knowing that he's free of this worldly suffering.
My love and prayers are with you and John.
