Rick Stevenson

Rick Stevenson succumbed to head injuries from a fall on December 5th, 2009, at age 57.

Rick was born in Redding and was a life long resident of Shasta County. He graduated from Anderson High in 1970 and attended Shasta College. For the last 15 years, he worked at the Walmart Distribution Center in Red Bluff.
He married the love of his life, Debbie, in July 2002.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Shirley Stevenson.

Rick is survived by his wife Debbie, Father Stan, step-mother Sharon, brother Rob, sister Sherry Pate, brother-in-law Wilson Pate, daughter Melissa, son Casey, step-daughters Alison Bouley and Amy Norris, son-in-laws Ryan Bouley and Troy Flick, grandchildren Regan Bouley, Ava Bouley, and Carson Stevenson and a very large expanded Stevenson family.

Rick was an avid outdoorsman, hunter and horseman and was active in the local cowboy community. He was a happy man that always had a smile on his face and a funny quote to pass along. Rick was actively involved in softball leagues for many years and was an avid Giants fan.

I'll never forget hanging out at the Stevenson place growing up.
I especially won't forget the V.F.W. dance where Rick picked out the biggest guy on the dance floor saying something like "my big brother says he's going to kick your butt and he's right over there"
I didn't think it was funny, but everyone else did, while they watched me grovel.

From the time I heard of this terrible accident, I had a hard time believing. I have known Rick for the past 15 years that he has work with me at the Wal-Mart Distribution Center. We would talk about everything from sports, to both of our love of hunting, and sometimes about the family. Rick was always saying how great Debbie is as his wife, and how they liked doing a lot of the same things. They were, as Rick said, best friends.
Rick will be missed, and I will probably look for Him to be driving around the corner in truck 758 for some time to come.

I was so sorry to hear the news about Rick. I met him through my brother-in-law Fred Kirch and my sister Susie. Rick walked with me in their wedding over 30 years ago and it probably has been 25 years since I had seen him last. I remember when he would come to visit Fred summers ago. He always joined right in with whatever was going on whether it was swimming or playing baseball in the Cow Pasture. He was kind and friendly. This is a tragedy and my prayers go out to his whole family. I know he was loved dearly and will be greatly missed by many.

I have lost an old friend, my best friend growing up. We rode together in the Oregon Trail Riders and seemed like we were always after the same girl in high school. The things we did growing up that our parents never knew about and even the things they did know about will always bring a smile to my heart. He was the type of friend you could always count on. We kind of lost touch some over the last years, but he will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Stevenson family.

Debbie - I am so thankful that I was able to know Rick, through you. One of the things that I will always remember is Rick's smiling face & his Giant's baseball hats. He is always such a doll! My favorite thing about Rick (and you) is the way that you love each other, have fun together & really respect each other. Thanks for being such an inspiring example. I will miss you, Rick.

Dear Stevenson Family,
GOD GAVE US COWBOYS
God gave us cowboys for a lot of good reasons, so we'd appreciate sunset and rainclouds and seasons.
God gave us cowboys so we wouldn't forget that there's no harm in hard work and no shame in sweat.
God gave us cowboys so we'd know what to do with horses and guitars and leather and boots.
God gave us cowboys so that we could see in a pinch you can make it on coffee and beans.
God gave us cowboys so that we would know there's a difference between lonely and ridin' alone.
God gave us cowboys so we'd understand that you're signing a contract when you shake a man's hand.
God gave us cowboys but only a few, so if you were lucky enough to know Rick, well that's God blessing you.
He will always be in our hearts.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all who loved Rick and knew him, and to those, who didn’t, you missed a great man.

Some of my fondest memories are rooted in the western values of the Stevenson clan family gatherings which most always involved a rope, horses, cattle or the pursuit thereof. And, of course, there is always lots of laughter and love.

One of my favorites is from a time about 40 years ago when we were kids at one such outing. The work was done for the moment, but play continued. The young boys in the group were wrestling over something, and this time the action was a little rougher than usual. Rob, Rick’s brother, the typical instigator of commotion, got strung up on a stout fence post upside down from the back of his pants-belt loops and couldn’t get loose. He was kicking, wiggling and a hollerin’ for Rick, who was standing near enough to keep a protective watchful eye, as well as close enough to get him down if he wanted. Rob was getting madder with each word and it seemed more so because Rick wasn’t movin’ and neither were the rest of us because it meant we’d have to cross Rick to get there.

After a fashion, I looked at Rick and said, “Well, do you suppose its time we help him?” With a quiet resolve and a deep wisdom just like Uncle Stan’s that I would come to respect and appreciate about Rick over the years, he simply and without too much effort said, “If we go too soon, he won’t learn nothin’ from it!” This was always Rick’s way, Cowboy Logic!

I’ve been very blessed to call Rick family and a dear friend for these many years. I will always treasure these many simple, but profound lessons learned along life’s way.

Dear Stevenson Family: Words cannot express how sad I am for you all. It seems so unreal that he's gone. I still remember the good ol' days at the Oregon Trail Riders when I was a little, little girl. Your family has always been such a steadfast staple in our area and it just seems so impossible that there is one anchor missing. The years that he and Rob worked with my Dad and all the memories. . it's just not right that he left so soon. With deepest sympathies and much love.
