Thomas Landles Obituary

Thomas A. Landles

Former Redding resident, Thomas A. Landles passed away February 1st, 2010,
at age 92.

Born June 4, 1917 in Marshfield, OR, to Scottish immigrant parents, he was the youngest of eight children. Tom was a graduate of the University of Oregon where he met and married the love of his life, Alice. Shortly after their marriage, Tom and Alice moved to New York and both earned Masters Degrees in Music from Columbia University. He was a professional trumpet player.

Tom served in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a bomber pilot. After WWII, he and Alice raised their family in Redding, where Tom ran a successful gyppo logging operation. They helped found the Shasta Symphony Orchestra and performed with them for many years. Tom and Alice retired to the Mendocino coast in 1972.

Tom approached life with enthusiasm and interest and was loved for his humor and quick wit. He was an avid golfer, word enthusiast, outdoorsman, and Oregon Ducks fan. He and his family enjoyed many years of travel, much of it in his own single engine plane.

He was an honorable, generous, loyal, and proud husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Alice; his two daughters, Janet and Mary Alice, and son-in-law, Ed; seven grandchildren, Jeremiah, Libbie, Kelsi, Bonnie, Aurora, Lucas, and Andy; and five great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

In appreciation for the excellent care he received during his short illness, the family suggests memorial donations in his name to The Mendocino Coast District Hospital Nursing Fund, 700 River Drive,
Fort Bragg, CA 95437.

Chuck and Sally Aikins and family

March 12, 2010

So sorry to hear of Tom's passing. Our families go back to the 1960's. Chuck and Tom talked aviation on many occasions and many hours. Chuck and Sally so enjoyed visiting with Alice and Tom in Mendocino. Many happy memories were shared through the years. Both Tom and Alice such warm, gracious amazing people.

Condolences to all the family. May your memories warm your hearts.

The Landles were our across-the-street neighbors in Sunset Terrace. I remember the day President Kennedy was shot. Alice and I ran out of our houses in shock and disbelief and met in the middle of the street. It was that long ago.
The Landles were kind and generous neighbors. We remember Tom's great sense of humour and that he was a gracious host.
We send our love and sympathy to Alice, Janet and Mary Alice and their dear families.
Brunie and Dorothy.
