VIRGINIA PUTNAM Obituary
1915-2010) Died Sunday, October 17th, at Air Force Village West in Riverside. She was 95. Virginia and her husband, Bob Putnam, lived in Redlands for the first 5 years of their marriage. Bob, a Redlands native, preceded her in death in November, 2007. She was the daughter-in-law of Harold and Laura Putnam (deceased), and sister-in-law of Raymond and Pearl Putnam (deceased), remembered by long-time Redlanders for their service to the community through Putnam Brothers Grocery Store. Virginia received a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Redlands in 1937, was President of Delta Kappa Psi, member of Spurs, Class Secretary, and sang in A Cappella Choir. She was a PEO member for over 70 years. She was a respected musician, with a long history of providing professional-quality music for community, church, school, alumni, and group functions. In Palos Verdes Estates, she provided piano music for the Neighborhood Church Yule Parlor Parade, sang in the Women's Chorus, and served on the Women's Fellowship Board. She was a Girl Scout leader for many years. Virginia began her career as an elementary school teacher. In Redlands, she was a substitute teacher and worked for the local draft board. She served as organist at First United Methodist Church in Redlands, and also was pianist and organist at other churches and chapels over the years. Virginia was a popular accompanist and soloist for Redlands musical performances in the late 1930's, frequently appearing with Florence Huston Beeler, soprano. Both were members of The Redlands Spinet. Gowned in exquisite costumes in keeping with their musical selections, they performed locally for the Contemporary Club, and before clubs and organizations throughout Southern California. The pair was managed by Gertrude Purple Gorham, known for her work with the Redlands Bowl summer programs. Virginia also appeared frequently as accompanist and piano soloist with the "Faculty Four" men's quartet, at conferences, service clubs, and local radio stations. Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Janet & Charles Johnson of Palm Coast FL, and Barbi & Dr. Mark Carpenter, of Yucaipa; 3 grandchildren in Yucaipa, Dr. Erin Estey & husband Dr. Mark Estey, Matthew Carpenter & wife Amy, and Ryan Carpenter; and 5 great-grandchildren. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for 2:30 PM, Friday October 29th, at Air Force Village West (Crystal Annex Room), 17050 Arnold Drive, Riverside CA, 951-697-2000.
