Mary Whitney Schaney Obituary

Mary M. Whitney Schany, 95, Ayrshire, passed away Monday, Nov. 30, 2020, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg
Mary M. Whitney Schany was born Feb. 20, 1925, in Emmetsburg, the daughter of Wilbur and Mary (McCormick) Price. She grew up in Emmetsburg and Graettinger and attended St. Mary's Academy, where she completed grade school, and then Emmetsburg High School, graduating in 1942.
On Feb. 16, 1944, Mary was united in marriage to Robert J. Whitney in Emmetsburg. They farmed in the area before buying their farm near Cylinder. Besides farming, they also had an excellent herd of Holstein dairy cattle.
Mary was employed by the Emmetsburg School System as a secretary for 21 years until her retirement in 1990. She also served as City Clerk in Cylinder for 21 years. Bob passed away on Oct. 18, 1993.
On Nov. 25, 2004, Mary was united in marriage to longtime friend, William P. Schany, in Emmetsburg. They farmed together near Ayrshire.
Mary was a devoted and faithful member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. While living near Ayrshire, Mary became a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; and son-in-law, Phil Gunther.
She is survived by her children, Sharon (Tom) Storey of Red Oak; Judy Gunther of Fairmont, Minn.; Bill (Bonnie) Whitney of Emmetsburg; Barbara (Paul) Thoreson of Swea City; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated by Rev. Bill Schreiber Saturday, Dec. 5, 2020, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Emmetsburg. Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Emmetsburg.
