George James Obituary

George Benjamin "Ben" James

GREENVILLE - Mr. George Benjamin "Ben" James, 66, passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018.

A memorial service for family and close friends will be held Saturday at 2 PM at First Presbyterian Church.

Ben was a lifelong Greenville resident, graduating from J.H. Rose High School and East Carolina University, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. He went on to follow in his father's footsteps and retired from the Greenville Recreation and Parks Department as Athletic Manager after over 30 years of service. Ben's greatest joy was training labs to run in field trials. He once ran in the AFC National Field Trials in Colorado with his lab, Chief. His two dogs, Bea and Pistol, were the light of his life.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents, Nealy and Delha James.

He is survived by his brother, Billy Neal James; sister, Patsy James Evans; close friends, Pete and Annelle West and their family; and caregivers, Dean Foy and Kim Tavasso.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to a charity of one's choice.

I not only had the pleasure to work with Ben at Parks & Rec, butI also helped him train his dogs in the summer time. For a college student on part time city wages, I wouldn't have eaten in those summers if it wasn't for Ben. He used to honk his trunk horn loud as he could at 7 am yelling for me to wake up when I had been out too long. I'll never forget calling him from Chico's (before cell phones were prominent) and said I wouldn't be training the next day. He said "ah wight bud!" and came and woke me up next day anyway. RIP my friend.

Ben taught me a lot as a professional and how to care for people. He cared so much for the Greenville Community. Thank you Ben, for showing me what Parks and Recreation was about and for giving me a chance as a clueless intern. I will forever be grateful. Rest in peace, my friend.
