Hattie Cannon Obituary

Mrs. Hattie Bell Green Cannon, lovingly called Sister, 79, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, daughter, sister, and mother-in-law, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2011 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Sister was born August 9, 1932 in Simpson to the late Frank and Clara Gardner Green. She spent most of her childhood in Simpson and teen years in Baltimore. She attended Pitt County Schools and Paul Lawrence Dunbar in Baltimore. After a whirlwind romance over the summer (three months) meeting at the tobacco barn, she married the late James Curtis "J.C." Cannon, a marriage that spanned 60 years.
Hattie worked seasonal jobs, Norcott Cleaners, and Three Steers restaurant before obtaining a job at Pitt County Memorial Hospital where she worked housekeeping, laboratory, operating room, then left to become shift supervisor of central sterile supply. She was affectionately known all throughout the hospital as Moma Hattie. After 25 years of service, Hattie retired in 1994. She received many awards and recognitions for her dedication and hard work. One thing about Hattie is that she knew no stranger. She worked at the voting polls because she loved to talk and meet people.
Hattie loved to fish, too, and could eat fish seven days a week and twice on Sunday. She would not bring home a cooler full of fish, but many a day she would bring home the biggest fish and tease J.C. for weeks on end.
Nothing was more precious to Hattie than her family, especially her husband, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends. She was often called Saint Hattie.
She was preceded in death by her son, Scottie Earl Cannon and wife, Katrin; brothers, David Green, James Earl Green; and uncle, Donnie Gardner.
She is survived by six daughters and three sons, Deborah Cannon of Rocky Mount, Darline Lucas and husband, Dr. Phil, of Hampton, Va., Diane Cannon-Logan and husband, Lambert, and Valeria Cannon, all of Newport News, Va., Linda Brock and Blinda Brock of Washington, D.C., Samuel Cannon and wife, Jacqueline, of Greenville, Stanley Cannon of Decatur, Ga., and James Anthony Cannon of Greenville; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, great nephews and nieces, Beulah White (sister) of Simpson and Jerry Green (brother) of Greenville, other relatives and friends.
Funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity United Holy Church. Viewing will be today from 3-8 p.m. at Phillips Brothers and Anderson Memorial Mortuary.

May it comfort you to know others are praying with you during this time. The love of family and friends is a comfort as you share this experience. However, the greatest comfort is in Jesus the Christ. Allow the Holy Spirit to sustain you. Sorry, I am unable to be with you in person.
