Jo Parkerson Obituary

Jo Ann Parkerson GREENVILLE - Jo Ann Parkerson, 78, of Greenville, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 23, 2025. She was born on July 11, 1947, to the late James and Frances Ripperger. Jo Ann dedicated her career to education. She received both her undergraduate and master's degrees in Education from Indiana University. Later, Jo Ann received her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina. Jo Ann taught elementary students in Indianapolis, taught at East Carolina University, and later taught at Methodist College, where she earned tenure and full professorship. Jo Ann was the Coordinator of the Elementary Education Program at Methodist and culminated as Professor Emeritus of Education. Alongside her beloved husband, Donald Parkerson, with whom she shared 53 years of marriage, she passionately co-authored eight influential books on the history of education. This remarkable collaboration stands as a testament to their shared intellect and deep connection. Jo Ann and Don loved to travel, especially cherishing their time relaxing at the beach. They also shared a deep appreciation for the arts, enjoying music, poetry, and the opera. Beyond her professional legacy, she was a true literary guide to the younger generation, known for her expertise in picking out award-winning, age-appropriate children's books for her nieces, nephews, and friends. She will also be deeply missed for her devotion to her Siamese cats, whom she adored. Jo Ann was preceded in death by her brother, James Michael Ripperger, and her sister, June Hoppenrath. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Donald Parkerson, along with numerous cherished nieces and nephews who brought great joy to her life. A Celebration of Life will be held privately for close family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Jo Ann's honor to the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org; or Saving Graces 4 Felines, www.savinggraces4felines.org/
